[Anitius Severinus Boethius]

LoTR, the early form of what became LoTR anyway, was written in serial form for Christopher Tolkien, the Professors youngest son, while he was serving in the RAF in WWII stationed in South Africa. Christopher was in his early twenties if I recall correctly.
