U.S. BUYS ENOUGH 'POX DOSES FOR ALL

The United States yesterday awarded a $428 million contract to a British firm for 155 million doses of smallpox vaccine.

The contract with Acambis Inc. will bring the nation's smallpox stockpile to 286 million doses by the end of next year - enough to protect "every man, woman and child in the U.S.," Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson said.

I am happy that we have this foresight but I cannot help wondering if the government knows more than they are telling us... since smallpox is supposedly eliminated except for a couple of labs... could it have been stolen? </tinfoil>
