A Newport Beach high school principal apologized Thursday for the use of the Confederate flag during a Civil War-themed halftime show at a football game against Westchester High, a school in Los Angeles with a predominately African American student body.
The principal and student band director at Newport Harbor High School said the school used poor judgment by displaying the 7-by-10-foot flag at last Friday's event, a sight that angered several Westchester fans who came to Orange County for the game.

The desire was to portray an era of history accuratelyAnd that's exactly what they did, so there should be no reason to apologize. The people who claim they are offended by this display of the Confederate flag, a display which took place in an historical context, want to rewrite history. The war on Southern Heritage continues.

To quote from the article, "A Nation Divided Stands United," portrays a Civil War battle....". This has been portrayed all year and the principal and some teachers have to apologize? I really don't think so.

Newport Beach is the W.A.S.P. pristine area of southern California, and even though Orange County is the hotbed of left coast conservatism, don't think the school system would dare be politically incorrect with all the liberals in SoCal.
Good thing the terrorists didn't attack the left coast, these same folks might have joined with the 'Berkleyites' to make "Welcome to California, Al Qaeda" signs!

With its crossed, star-studded blue diagonals on a red field, the Confederate flag still stokes racial and political animosity in the South. There and elsewhere, many African Americans see it as a symbol of slavery, while some whites consider it simply an emblem of Southern pride and heritage. To me it represents the deaths of thousands of brave men that died in a terrible war.
The Union armies had from 2,500,000 to 2,750,000 men. Their losses, by the best estimates:
Battle deaths: 110,070
Disease, etc.: 250,152
Total 360,222
The Confederate strength, known less accurately because of missing records, was from 750,000 to 1,250,000. Its estimated losses:
Battle deaths: 94,000
Disease, etc.: 164,000
Total 258,000
Info
I don't really care what the PC crowd thinks.

In Southeast Texas, some students were recently suspended from Silsbee High School for wearing Confederate T shirts while 8 miles up the road the Confederate battle flag flies proudly from a flagpole in front of Evadale High School, the home of the Evadale Rebels. Go figure.

Here's the enemy: Ms. Dana Perryman, Principal of Westchester HS - the whiners who complained about the flag display. She has no phd - must be a "gift" to the school system.
