My fellow Americans tend to do the opposite of the Bourbons: "They learn—then forget."

Or even better ... thanks to BigWaveBetty's weighing in with the "Sominex" necessary! ... the West just "goes to sleep" like the leninists knew they would.

Postmodern Western Civilization reminds me of an East Village junkie on the nod: peels itself up off the ground only to engage in just enough activity to maintain its existence.

This will be an long war. Doubtful it will be unending, which is where you and I part company. Elites cannot sustain overlong engagements of anything, especially elites who themselves are in the throes of a slow-motion revolution. The prophet of the 21st century turned out to be Vilfredo Pareto, not Toffler.

Also, there may be no enemies to create, much less fight once this comes to a stopping point.

My favorite line that comes to mind from all this is from the Belgian Troskyist Ernest Mandel, who in 1989 quipped "What do you get after Late Capitalism? More Captialism!" The West may sleep, but Leninism, like its father, is very definately in a tomb.
