I am watching "Private Ryan," on ABC, I think. Dumb me---I didn't think that "sh*t" was used in prime time. Or "g.d." But the F word!!???!!.................nothing follows.

I think your title is FUBAR!

What was with all of this FUBAR crap? That wasn't a WWII term. And I never heard it in Korea. Isn't is a Vietnam era term?

The common term in WWII and Korea was SNAFU - Situation normal, all F***** up.

"But the F word!!???!!"

Back in the mid-1970s, one of the networks ran a one-man play that was a bunch of stuff that FDR said, it's been a long time and I don't recall all the details, but I don't think it was speeches he'd given, but discussions/conversations he'd held, etc.

Anyway, the show came with tons of disclaimers, and had many instances of uncensored f-words and s-words. So, while it's rare, it's nothing new.

One thing no one has touched on,war changes people and extended war makes criminals. After experiancing death and killing it all becomes easier, rape is no longer wrong and mutilating the enemy is everyday common.Watch some of the pics from chechnya, soldiers cutting off heads and laughing.War is hell, killing becomes a job and commonplace. Many spent more than one tour in vietnam, just for fun.Where else could you kill at will, rape when you wanted,do all the drugs you could stand and still be a hero. Not everyone mind you but many did.Being able to kill legally is euphoric"spl".Like a hunter after game, some get sick of it and others relish in it.Some do it in the name of their god, some for the full pleasure and some out of duty for country.WAR IS HELL.

"I dislike Speilberg's politics, but he makes DAMN GOOD MOVIES.

"I think Pvt Ryan should be required viewing for every FReeper."

Just think of what he could do if he woke up one morning and realized that he was on "the dark side", and made an immediate leap out of it. It's happened to others (heck, even Jerry Rivers is claiming to be one of us now:)), and he's bright enough to put two and two together once he gets "unhypnotized" by the lies of the left.

In the 50's adult men of quality not only didn't use the "f" word or it's ilk in mixed company, they dealt with other men who used obscene words in the wrong place. I remember as a youth hearing men say to the offender "Watch your mouth! There's ladies present!" and they didn't say it as a joke or with a smile. Now some women use the "f" word themselves, in mixed company - they're not ladies.

How dare they. My favorite all time scene was brutalized when it was first shown on prime time TV.!!!

All those cowpokes were sittin' 'round the camp fire eatin' beans. Then one rises an ... A horse whinnies!!! Then another 'poke rises and there is another whinney. The next thing you know it's the Horsey Tabernacle Choir!!! Then Slim Pickens comes out of his tent and is bleaped out by the second versus of the Alleluhah Chorus!

I'm surprised Speillberg didn't edit out all those guns on Omaha Beach and replace them with dandelions!

I think Mel Brooks puts life in perspective, and that scene was one of them.In the uncut version the horse didn't whinny.and in Blazing saddles he made fun of everyone,no one was left out.If we replaced the f word with copulating it would mean the same thing but not have the same effect. On the other hand John wayne could have the same effect and not use the f word. Now about those WW11 soldiers,I am sure the N word was used quite frequntly with no blushing required.

I think your post is a load of bullcrap, and I resent it.

You sully the memories of our veterans with your claptrap.

Hmm, the movie can be just as realistic by substituting the F word with something else. No, you get a clue.

For all the would-be censors,

Just a little term for you folks: Bowdlerize. It means to cut out all offensive references, but the connotation is someone who censors to ridiculous lengths. Thomas Bowdler produced an expurgated volume of the works of Shakespeare in the eighteenth century that removed any references to sex, violence, etc. This effort was followed by expurgated version of the Bible that removed any ...ehem... interesting passages (say like Lot's night out). I suppose your version of the Bible has had Jesus' death removed, as such violence might be unsettling for children? Oh, and hopefully it's not the KJV, as that contains several blue terms ("shat," the past tense of sh*t, for one...).

Sorry, but cutting SPR would remove the elements essential to its impact. If your kids aren't old enough to understand, then change the channel.

resent it if you like but extended war can have that effect. When killing becomes easy morals decline.Ever heard of buck fever,it happens in combat also. The thrill of the kill, not everyone, some are sickend by the thought of death. On the battle field it is kill or be killed and for some it is easier by romantisising it.When one trains for combat you are litteraly brainwashed into loving it.Thats what makes a good soldier. To be able to kill and not hesitate and to kill again and religate. The more enemy you kill the less of your buddies will be killed.Puting notches in the handle or ears in your pouch.Bottom line the profesional soldier on the front line kills for a living, and he does so,so you and I can have football on sunday and take our kids to the park.Go to church on sunday if we want or take a drive in the country. Our brave soldiers defend our way of life and to do that they have to kill, and be good at it.And we are all worried about the f word.

It did not bother me or my wife. Frankly we did not think it was out of the ordinary due primarilly to the context and plot. My 15 year old chuckled but he still laughs at fart jokes.

I think it could be a problem if suddenly the tv was all cuss all the time.

There were more "F" words spoken in the movie Private Ryan than there were spoken by all of our soldiers in WWII.
