Sheriff's Deputy Shot; Suspect Killed

A sheriff's deputy in eastern Arizona is hospitalized in critical condition after being shot while trying to arrest a suspect. The suspect was in turn shot and killed.

The confrontation occurred in the town of Eager around midnight.

Department of Public Safety spokesman Officer Steve Volden says the Apache County sheriff's deputy was shot twice in the head. He was airlifted to a Phoenix hospital.

His name wasn't immediately released.

Volden says the deputy was among several officers who were attempting to arrest 58-year-old William Milton Cooper of Eagar.

Volden says Cooper had been armed with a handgun. He says details of the shooting will be released later at a news conference. DPS was called in to investigating the shooting.

I suppose you have the sedition statutes at hand. Care to cite a Title?

Nope, sure don't. But I'll try looking them up tomorrow afternoon when I get back to work.

But, according to the Merriam Webster Online Collegiate dictionary (certainly not enforceable in court! ;), sedition is defined as:

Etymology: Middle English, from Middle French, from Latin sedition-, seditio, literally, separation, from se- apart + ition-, itio act of going, from ire to go -- more at SECEDE, ISSUE
Date: 14th century
: incitement of resistance to or insurrection against lawful authority

Then, under the Thesauraus part, it has:

Entry Word: sedition
Function: noun
Text: an offense against official ruling authority (as a government or sovereign) to which one owes allegiance (considered the defense industry strike to be overt sedition)
Synonyms seditiousness, treason
Related Word alienation, disaffection, estrangement; action, protest, strike; coup, coup d'etat, putsch; insurrection, mutiny, rebellion, revolt, revolution, uprising; quislingism
Contrasted Words allegiance, fealty, fidelity, loyalty; duty, respect, responsibility

From what I recall of these laws, and this definition, then inciting others to rise against government, be it city, state or federal, would likely fall under sedition laws.

Perhaps my interpretation of the implication of that statement was wrong. The person who wrote the statement can best clarify their stance. What do you see as the implied meaning? What point do you think the writer was trying to make?

Militia leader killed, deputy wounded during attemped arrest

Associated Press/The Arizona Republic
Nov. 06, 2001 12:20:00

EAGAR - A national leader of the militia movement has been killed and an Apache County sheriff's deputy wounded in a shootout, authorities said.

William Milton Cooper, 58, of Eager, had hosted a talk show broadcast on the Worldwide Christian Radio out of Nashville, which receives it via phone from his home in St. Johns. He had millions of listeners worldwide, including Timothy McVeigh.

The deputy, whose name was being withheld by authorities, was shot twice in the head while trying to arrest Cooper, a state Department of Public Safety spokesman said today. Cooper was killed by another officer.

Several deputies were attempting to arrest Cooper, who was armed with a handgun, said Officer Steve Volden, a spokesman for the DPS, which was investigating the shooting.

He said details of the shooting would be released later today.

The deputy was in critical condition at a Phoenix hospital early today, Volden said.

Cooper was one of the most widely known prophets of the "patriot movement," railing at the federal government and talking of doomsday omens in his radio broadcast.

McVeigh, who was executed in May for the bombing of the federal building in Oklahoma City, listened to Cooper's broadcasts for inspiration, according to testimony by James Nichols, brother of Oklahoma bombing co-defendant Terry Nichols during a 1996 pretrial hearing.

Like some other patriot leaders, Cooper refused to get a driver's license or pay federal income taxes, saying he is willing to risk getting ticketed and has found a legal way to avoid the taxes.

The patriot movement grew during the 1990s, fed by a series of news events - the siege of Randy Weaver in Idaho, the raid on the Branch Davidians near Waco, Texas and the signing of gun-control laws.

The sheriffs office was no doubt operating on orders from 'higher ups', and for a few shekel's of gold.

Yup. You'd be SURPRISED how much of America is on the take - welfare, subsidies, gov't grants to name but a few programs by which federal money flows down to the peons ...

Damn it steve-b, look at all the posts here calling him a Great American and a hero, and now you have to go and spoil it by showing that he was Art Bell on crack.

You and I are sheeple steve. Don't you know? "We don't know the score". (Right Falcon? Were you at the UFO landing site too?)

It's up to Great Americans like Cooper to save us from ourselves, and the NWO and the little green men. < sarcasm off >

26-122. Components of militia

A. The militia is divided into the national guard of Arizona, the state guard when organized, and the unorganized militia.

B. The national guard consists of commissioned officers, warrant officers, enlisted personnel, organizations, staffs, corps and departments of the federally recognized and regularly commissioned, warranted and enlisted militia of the state, organized and maintained pursuant to law, and all members thereof honorably retired by age or disability.

C. The numerical strength, composition, distribution, organization, arms, uniforms, equipment, training and discipline of the federally recognized national guard shall be prescribed by the governor in conformity with the allocation of units to the state by the department of the army and the department of the air force of the United States.

D. The inactive national guard consists of commissioned, warranted and enlisted personnel relieved from assignment to the national guard by the adjutant general, or at their own request, under regulations prescribed by the department of national defense of the United States, and not reassigned to another component of the armed forces of the United States.

E. The unorganized militia consists of members of the militia not members of the national guard or state guard when organized.

As ive said numerous times an unorganized militia is the people and the govt has turned them into CRIMINALS

We, the people, ARE govt. The elected officials have been going beyond their Constitutionally designated boundaries for some time. So, we can charge them with sedition?

I do not believe Cooper was dangerous. Why didn't they just leave him alone?

Why don't we just put it to a vote?

Better yet, why don't we all just see how we all feel on this issue and then we can get on Oprah ...

I mean, does anyone ever *really* mean to commit a crime - like pulling a weapon on somebody (like Cooper was supposed to have done)?

Why is it that we can't all ... uhhh ... just get along? </sarcasm>
