SA was never a Dutch colony as such. Dutch explorers established a settlement on the Cape where ships en route to the East could fill up on necessary stocks. That is how the Dutch got to SA. Later on they moved inland and, indeed, settled as farmers. The real Dutch colonies (Indonesia, Surinam, Ceylon, Brasil etc.) were never primarily agrarian. What the colonisers were looking for was trade, not so much territorial conquest. In the 19th Century this approach changed somewhat, not in the least because of a sense of guilt which inspired religious people to 'civilise' the local populations.

I wish that people, on this forum, would NOT feel that they must post replies to threads, about topics that they know very little to nothing at all about . If they were to just read the threads and the posts , from people who DO know more than they do, they just might learn a great deal.

I have no idea why anyone would assume that the Africaners ( who are really a mixture od Dutch , French, and German settlers ) are " DUTCH ", when most of those families have been cictizens of SOUTH AFRICA , far longer than their own families have lived in the USA, and / or when we were just a bunch of English, DUTCH, etc. colonies. I wonder IF they consider themselves Irish, English, German, French, Polish, Czech, Russian, Scotch , Japanese, or perhaps African, instead of AMERICAN . If they are Americans, then WHY arent the descendents of settlers , in South Africa, South African ?

I am confused by the enmity and hatred shown peoples who have NEVER been enemies of the USA , and have led blameless lives.

If I understand your post correctly I think I agree with you. It is quite informative to find that there is a lot of antipathy towards the Dutch (as well as others) on this site, which is rather surprising. Do you have any idea where that comes from?

As much as I would love to de-humanize these vile uncaring monstrocities of walking DNA, I cannot deny their humanity. Sad, isn't it. Many educated South African people saw this coming years ago, but there was a problem getting their money out of the country. They suffered huge losses.

As for AIDS, a physician friend of mine spent months in South Africa in the 80s writing and talking everywhere about the coming AIDS nightmare, but apparently not enough people, black or white, wanted to believe her.
