Abstract
Hijackers who flew airliners into World Trade Center and Pentagon exploited immigration system that critics contend is riddled with loopholes and that is geared to ease the way for commerce, whether in form of tourism, business or study; experts on terrorism say security precautions often take back seat to pressure from industry, concerns of neighboring governments and even bureaucratic rivalries in US government; say sheer volume of daily border crossings--300 by land from Mexico alone--make exclusion of all foreign terrorists impossible; photo (M)
Five Israelis Held In New York |
October 25, 2001 Five young Israelis are "on the verge of collapse," according to family members, as their incarceration in New York on charges relating to the Bin Laden attacks continues. They were arrested on Sept. 11, only hours after the World Trade Center attack, on charges of "plotting to blow up" a New York bridge. |
Yes I am growing weary of these people too.
Your post #78 is well stated and I agree with all of it. This is no longer business as usual.
Our borders and immigration policies have become a national disgrace, and now a huge national security nightmare.
We need to end this immigration "free for all".
O well, and your point is ... ?
I should have been specific. I am also for deporting all non American citizens from ANY Mid Eastern country. I know that may seem harsh to you but this is exactly what we need to do. And soon. (by Joe Hadenuf)
That kind of logic is exactly the same logic used by the ban-the-gun advocates. All gun crimes are committed by gun owners so assume all gun owners are guilty. The terrorist acts were committed by Muslims so assume all Muslims are guilty. One statement seems just as assinine as the other to me. (by Non-Sequitur)This is a preposterous irrelevancy.
As the entire country has been repeatedly lectured, most Muslims are amazingly peaceful, deeply religious, wouldn't hurt a fly. Indeed, endless invocations of the pacific nature of most Muslims is the only free speech it is safe to engage in these days. This is a preposterous irrelevancy. Fine, we get it. The New York Times can rest assured that every last American has now heard the news that not all Muslims are terrorists. That's not the point. Not all Muslims may be terrorists, but all terrorists are Muslims -- at least all terrorists capable of assembling a murderous plot against America that leaves 7,000 people dead in under two hours. How are we to distinguish the peaceful Muslims from the fanatical, homicidal Muslims about to murder thousands of our fellow citizens? Are the good Muslims the ones who live quiet lives, pray a lot and obey the law? So did the architects of Bloody Tuesday's mass murder. Are the peaceful Muslims the ones who loudly proclaim their hatred of Osama Bin Laden? Mohammed Atta did that, too.
There are one million Muslims in the USA on temporary visas. They are the swamp. The terrorists (relatively few in number) are gators hiding in the swamp. We can either spend all eternity hunting gators, or we can do the sensible thing and drain the damn swamp.
The fact that someone is willing to work and make money here does not in and of itself reaffirm our culture which is first world Judeo-Christian not third world midieval.
This "It's The Economy, STUPID!" mentality makes me ill. Leaving terrorist amongst us is suicidal. What exactly do you think will happen to the economy if 1 million AMERICANS are killed?? Hmmmmmmmm?
It still won't protect us from a container that might carry a weapon of mass destruction. It won't protect our troops and embassies.
You're right. But if we deport illegals and cancel visas and deport foreign nationals from hostile countries along with tightening up our borders, there's a good possibility that terror cells on our soil will be disrupted enough to prevent widespread harm.
Furthermore, by alienating middle-easterners, it will reduce our ability to hire linguists for counter intelligence operations.
That is BS. There are plenty of bi-lingual AMERICANS who would do this work. Besides, it's just a little late for counter intelligence ops after the clintoons managed to ignore the threat for 8 years. Foreign nationals asking for that kind of job now would make me suspect that they may be double agents.
Major premise: We must do something.
Minor premise: This is something.
Conclusion: Therefore we must do it.
She's in the process of naturalization. Remember, it's a process. Legal immigrants have to spend time in the US before citizenship. She's on that path and will be a citizen in a few months, but until then, she's staying put here in the US regardless of how you feel.
We may be at war, but not with the nation she's from. Her nation is supporting the US fully.
I get the feeling you're just anti-immigrant, even if they are legal and peaceful and productive citizens. We have names for people who hate immigrants -- bigots, racists, isolationists.
I don't worry about your phony battle cry to rid the nation of immigrants. Thank God that intolerant ultra-right-wingers aren't in charge. We have a good man in George W. Bush who appreciates those who want to be a part of the American culture.
So, "family values" is 100% lip service with ultra-right-wingers? I thought so. They talk a good talk, but stumble when it's time to walk the walk. And some of these people falsely call themselves Christians, because anti-immigrant hatred is certainly a value that Jesus Christ would NOT uphold.
As I said before, thank God that we have a tolerant man in the White House who would ignore you ultra-right-wing folks who hate immigrants who want to be a part of the American culture.
I think some here who just hate innocent, peaceful people who happen to have a different accent or skin color.
