Abstract
Hijackers who flew airliners into World Trade Center and Pentagon exploited immigration system that critics contend is riddled with loopholes and that is geared to ease the way for commerce, whether in form of tourism, business or study; experts on terrorism say security precautions often take back seat to pressure from industry, concerns of neighboring governments and even bureaucratic rivalries in US government; say sheer volume of daily border crossings--300 by land from Mexico alone--make exclusion of all foreign terrorists impossible; photo (M)
Five Israelis Held In New York |
October 25, 2001 Five young Israelis are "on the verge of collapse," according to family members, as their incarceration in New York on charges relating to the Bin Laden attacks continues. They were arrested on Sept. 11, only hours after the World Trade Center attack, on charges of "plotting to blow up" a New York bridge. |
Your proposal sounds nice until you really think about it. Then it makes no sense. Many foreigners work here. Yes, alot of them are gardeners, and their deportation wouldn't have a significant economic impact. But many foreigners work in high-tech jobs or in financial jobs. NY City is the center of the financial world, and eliminating foreigners would decimate NY City, which in turn would decimate our economy. Your proposal would kill high-tech, would kill financial services, and would make us very poor. No thanks. We've always had something of an open door policy, and that's why we're strong: because we get the best and brighest from other countries. Look at Indians (the dot kind, not the feather kind). Many of them in this country are hard working, entrepreneurial, and contribute a great deal to our economy. Then look at India: the place is a mess. Why is there this disparity? Because many of the best and brighest Indians left India and came here because there's opportunity here! And we're better off too: they spend their money here, for the most part, and help grow our corporations.

This kind of arrogance and pride will destroy us. If we don't adapt a War Mentality, NOW, we are in for some deep shiite!!
There is a verse in the old testament, very appropriate for this discussion, "They worship Manna". If we are willing to do anything as a nation to have it all, we will in fact be left with nothing!!! IMHO!!

Animal rights activists think this is unfair. 'How can you kill all the tigers when maybe only one or two may be guilty?'
I can explain it like this. I don't give a damn which one is guilty. What I give a damn about is the fact that tigers are killing our children. I couldn't care less about the civil rights of tigers. For you to expect me to think differently is absurd.
You know I am so damn tired of people that are afraid to do anything because we may loose a few bucks and hurt the economy. So damn what. I don't care if it cost our economy 500 billion.
How soon we forget that we just had 6000 people murdered, all of whom met a violent death. I say deport every single Mid Easterner that is not a citizen. Every single one. And to be fair, deport every single illegal alien. It should have been done years ago. Enough is enough.
We have millions of criminal illegal aliens in our country. Should we just look the other way? How many millions more do we take in until it chokes us off? Would 20 million more be enough for you? How about 65 million more? How many millions more would be enough for you? Enough is enough.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Roughly 8 million illegal immigrants live in the United States, early estimates from the 2000 census show. Their presence swells the country's foreign-born population to more than 31 million people.
More detailed figures are due from the Census Bureau (news - web sites) in the next month, and a final count of the foreign-born population will be released next year.
If the estimate of undocumented Americans holds up, it would be about 1 million more than an unofficial forecast by the Immigration and Naturalization Service early this year. Such a determination would highlight further the impact that immigration has had in reshaping the nation's demographic makeup, said University of Michigan demographer William Frey.
The 2000 census count of 35.3 million Hispanics nationwide was about 2.5 million higher than previously estimated. Hispanics now rival blacks as the country's largest minority group.
``This helps fit together the pieces of the census, the much higher level of immigration makes much more sense,'' said Urban Institute demographer Jeffrey Passel.
The Census Bureau does not ask about citizenship status on its forms and stresses that it keeps all answers confidential. The bureau uses INS data to help estimate undocumented Americans.
The 1990 head count found 19.8 million foreign-born residents. Several government agencies have placed the number of undocumented immigrants that year at about 3.5 million.
The latest estimates come at a time when Congress is scrutinizing the nation's immigration and visa systems after the Sept. 11 terror attacks.
``These new estimates have enormous implications for the security of our nation,'' said Steven Camarota, research director at the Center for Immigration Studies, which favors stricter immigration controls.
While most illegal immigrants by far are not terrorists, ``that hundreds of thousands of people are able to settle in the United States illegally each year indicates that terrorists who wish to do so face few obstacles,'' Camarota said.
INS Commissioner James Ziglar has said the issue is not necessarily about immigration itself, but about cracking down on nonimmigrant visitors ``who came here to do evil.''
``How to reduce the threat of terrorism and bring the undocumented population under control has come to the forefront'' of priorities, agency spokesman William Strassberger said Wednesday.
Among priorities stressed by INS and Congress are to identify and remove ``terrorist threats'' and to crack down on those who have overstayed time-limited visas.
The 2000 preliminary estimates come from a lengthy report the bureau produced over its decision against releasing statistically adjusted population data to distribute federal funds across the country.
The foreign born estimate is consistent with earlier surveys this year from the Census Bureau. Frey and Passel suggested the number of illegal immigrants could be even higher because of a census undercount.

This one speaks for itself.....
No, criminals make The United States of America less safe...Wasting resources makes US less economically prosperous.
A program/system of sponsorship is a positive alternative to the blanket deportation advocated by some....but I'm getting too old and easy going for that.
In light of 6000 people being murdered in a very violent way, I think someone better start overreacting and soon. We sure forget quickly don't we?
To late about our lifestyle pal. As it started changing radically about 30 years ago. I would like to see America restored to its former image and lifestyle, before millions upon millions of criminal illegal aliens invaded our nation. And go back 40 years ago before this insane immigration "free for all" which now threatens all of our families and children.
California even had a free election several years back to put an end to tax paid support of millions of illegal aliens and the government stepped in and burned our ballots and declared our election unconstitutional. Our borders and immigration policies are now a national disgrace and now a national security nightmare.
As this immigration "free for all continues".
LOL....You ornery!
These are your words, not mine.
