A NATION CHALLENGED: IMMIGRATION; Suspects in Hijackings Exploited Loopholes in Immigration Policy

Abstract
Hijackers who flew airliners into World Trade Center and Pentagon exploited immigration system that critics contend is riddled with loopholes and that is geared to ease the way for commerce, whether in form of tourism, business or study; experts on terrorism say security precautions often take back seat to pressure from industry, concerns of neighboring governments and even bureaucratic rivalries in US government; say sheer volume of daily border crossings--300 by land from Mexico alone--make exclusion of all foreign terrorists impossible; photo (M)

Five Israelis Held In New York
|
October 25, 2001 Five young Israelis are "on the verge of collapse," according to family members, as their incarceration in New York on charges relating to the Bin Laden attacks continues. They were arrested on Sept. 11, only hours after the World Trade Center attack, on charges of "plotting to blow up" a New York bridge.
Katie Shmuel of the Galilee town of Yokne'am, southeast of Haifa, says that her son Yaron is in "a very critical psychological situation," given that they are not allowed to have visitors and the difficult conditions in which they are being held. "Even the Israeli Consul-General in New York was allowed to visit only after asking several times and receiving a special permit," Katie told Arutz-7's Yosef Zalmanson today. "He was allowed to talk to them only in English, and only from behind a glass partition. The Consul told me that the boys are in a bad state and that they are being held under difficult conditions."
When asked why the five youths, aged 22-26, are being held, Katie replied with despair: "It's ludicrous. They were on the George Washington Bridge [between upper Manhattan and New Jersey] at the time of the bombing, and the FBI had warnings of a terrorist plot, of guys in a white van, to blow up the bridge. So when the FBI saw this van, with my son and his four friends - one of them had a large sum of money, there were two razor knives in the van, and one of the boys is named Omer, which the FBI guys thought was Omar - they put one and one together and got three, and immediately arrested them... For the first few days, the boys were held in an FBI dungeon, tied up, with no clothes and no food." She said that original reports that they had been arrested while boisterously watching the disaster from a rooftop "are totally fabricated. For one thing, they weren't even on a roof, they were in a van..."
When asked how she explains her son's continued incarceration and that of his friends, she said, "I truly have no explanation for this incredible story - except this: The Americans are using them as pawns to pressure the Israeli government. Am I being clear enough?" She said that President Moshe Katzav and others had attempted to intervene, but there have been no results so far. The youths are being held in the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn.
A spokesperson for the Israeli Consulate in New York told Arutz-7 that in the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks, "the Americans now have different procedures for dealing with the detention of anyone arrested in connection with the attacks. Every single request of ours must go through the FBI and the State Department's legal team." She said, "We are doing as much as we possibly can on their behalf," including, she said, getting local Jewish leaders involved in the cause of the imprisoned young Israelis.

What was interesting about the NY subway bomb making group was that they themselves assumed this guy would be in favor of what they were doing, they didn't feel the need in hiding it from him. Luckily they were wrong about him, but I'm afraid their assumptions are right in most cases. 418 posted on 1/2/02 10:17 AM Pacific by FITZ [ Post Reply
You are SO right on above statement. Islam/muslums just want to blame all their problems on the USA.

I knew Iranians in pilot training, at an Air Force base in Texas, in the 70s. You are right, they were all quite nice guys, but most were very much anti American. Weird huh? You are right, they did not seem to associate much with the Arab student pilots, but kept pretty much to themselves. They loved chasing the Mexican women there, however.

Re: Your #19: Faulty logic; erroneous thinking.
Just exactly where do you come up with the numbers you're using? Are you suggesting that there are really that many in this country illegally and that their presence has that profound an impact on our economy (POSITIVE impact, that is)???
Utter nonsense.

Clinton didn't take office until 1992. So what the hell was going on in the last year of Bush senior's administration?

The Persians seem like they're really decent enough people deep down. Even when they had those hostages, they didn't kill them and seem like they're a bit undecided---that they almost like Americans. They submitted to the Arab's religion back when the Arabs came into Persia and took over and forced them to convert, but they don't really like or admire the Arabs. They'll even tell you they really had a better culture than Arabs ever did. Maybe it's because they know what happens to Muslims who change to another religion ---but I wonder if deep down they wish they'd kept their previous religion or could choose something else.

The operative word is "illegal". The poster above is stipulating that if we eject all illegal aliens from this country that our economy will go to hell. THAT is unadulterated bovine feces.

ntil our nation (USA) truly addresses immigration legal/illegal, our Homeland Defense Program is a joke! We must cancel all Visas, and deport Aliens, both legal and illegal, and clear the deck. As with the Israelis being held still in New York, whether innocent or not, we must act. Some will say this is "Throwing the Baby out with the bathwater", maybe. But mark these words, this action WILL OCCUR, deportations, if another major terrorist attack occurs!! Agreed. I have made the same prediction: the U.S. WILL act, will do the politically incorrect but necessary things IF another attack occurs. It's ashamed that it will take more deaths. But even the horror of 9/11 hasn't overcome the hold of political correctness on the nation.

I could not read all of this. I'm pissed, when I read some of my fellow Freepers replay, don't they ever think about people like me. I don't take anything, I give a lot. (p.e.last year 40 mill.$ taxes!!!) I love this country, but I don't know it will last. I try to stay happy here, but if the pressure to foreigners is getting too unrealistic, I'll leave. Btw, I'm European, blond, a very normal mother of three, two adult-children had to stay in Germany(visa!) 16 years old living with us here. We are leaving, when we feel, Democratie is not served anymore, the way it should be! There are so many Americans with a good common sence. But too many ignorants, sometimes I think too many on this board! God bless The World!!

People...people...let's try to be rational about things, shall we? These "aliens" provide America with one-third of its engineers, scientists, computer programmers, doctors, and others. Do you really believe that America would be as technologically advanced as it is (both militarily and for civilian purposes) if immigration were stopped? Not likely. Go to Silicon Valley and see who works there. Go to the Aerospace (Boeing, TRW, Lockheed, etc.) companies in Southern California and see who works there. Go to Naval Research Labs or Night Vision and see who works there. Go to inner-city and rural hospitals and see who treats rural and inner-city Americans, who are generally the Americans most in need of health care. After seeing all this, if you are still convinced of the need to deport all "aliens", then feel free to complain. Not that your complaints will actually affect anything, of course.
