FREEPERS: Are You a Vet or Currently Serving in the Armed Forces?

Posted on 10/24/2001 7:40:43 AM PDT by Billie

Are you a veteran or currently serving in the Armed Forces? If you would like to be included in our daily USO CANTEEN threads, please contact me by Freep Mail with information and photo.

Below are a few of the Freepers who have already sent their photos for inclusion. Some are in uniform; others have asked to be included with a current photo instead. We salute all our veterans and active service men and women and offer our heartfelt thanks for your service.

Logos served in the United States Army from 1962-83. SwedeGirl's husband was a 1st Lieutenant in the photo above, serving in Viet Nam 1/9 CAV Huey Lift Pilot 1969-70. Neil E. Wright's photo was taken in 1977 at CTF 72/ComPatWingsWestpac, Kamiseya, JA. He was in the Navy. FallGuy, Snow Bunny's husband, also served in the Navy on the USS KULA GULF. 1John submitted his photo in uniform and asked us to "guess the year" it was taken; hopefully he will provide that information since no one guessed correctly! Sneakypete's photo was taken after he returned from a mission in Laos, Viet Nam in 1969. T'wit's photo in uniform was taken during the famed "Berlin Crisis" of 1960. COB1 sent his photo from his first liberty out of Boot Camp. LadyX was a Marine in the Korean Conflict. She was a Classroom Subjects Instructor for women recruits at Parris Island. Dick Bachert submitted this photo from the U.S.A.F. when he was 24 years old. 68-69TonkinGulfYatchClub served in the United States Navy. YankeeinSC, husband of Commonsense, is a Viet Nam Air Force veteran. His photo was taken on the recent Freeper Cruise. Delta 21 is currently serving in the U.S. Navy, going on 20 years. JoeSixPack1 is retired from the U.S.M.C.

Hang on, Billie. My 72 year old mom needs to find them, and my 73 year old dad needs to scan them and e-mail them to me. It might take a little while. I hope he remembers how to e-mail attachments.

You have to forgive me...
Naturally, the CORPS BIRTHDAY is firmly entrenched in my mind, followed by Veterans Day!
No other day counts as greatly!
I hit Post before I could correct it.

Hey Billie & Tonkin, Thanks for including me. (Center pic on the bottom row. I made the big time, Ma!!)

It all started in 1980. I was a M-1 Tanker(Steel on Target) for 4 years. Then joined the U.S Coast Guard and have been here ever since. From Coos Bay, OR to Va Beach(CGC Cherokee WMEC-165)to the New Mexico desert(LORAN Station Las Cruces) to working with the DEA at the El Paso Intel Center, I dont think I could be more well rounded. I am on a 180' Buoy Tender stationed in Guam now. (Where America's day begins. Check your watches...its around 1430 on thursday the 25th as I am writing this.)

I was a lurker here for the first 6 or 7 months and posted on occation. Usually I just throw my $.02 in when I feel its needed. I have been trying to re-build my web presents lately but with our current situation its hard to find the time. Thank GOD for FreeRepublic, I get all my news and info from here and am glad to say I stay very well informed.

If anyone knows where I can get a small chunk of web space please freepmail me. I need someplace to post some of my pics from to FreeRepublic.

Come and give us a visit. You might see someone you know.

Its an inside look at your tax dollars being worked down to the last penny! The Navy retires ships before they get a quarter this old!

Commissioned on May 11th, 1944, its not even the oldest ship in the U. S. Coast Guard yet!

And I dont want to hear any "Shallow Water Navy" Jokes either. The last swim call I took was in over 22,500 feet of water.

LET'S ROLL

Actually from Roswell (insert alien joke here) New Mexico. Coos Bay was my first Coast Guard unit. Bustin' big surf on the Intrepid MLB 52315. If I was forced to live by the Ocean, Coos Bay or Bandon would be the place! Cape Blanco is beautiful. I was on the Coquille (sp) River Patrol during the summer months, down from Coos Bay in '86 and 87. We squirted water on a big fire there on the waterfront one summer, but there was no hope for that one!

This is an oldie but goodie. While in basic training at Lackland AFB I picked the lock on my T.I.s (Training Instructor) office one weekend when he was gone and set up photos with my new Polaroid instamatic camera. At $5.00 a pop, I was rich in no time using our sergeant's office and hat. I couldn't wait to hit San Antonio on our only pass to live it up and see the Alamo

Only had one problem. One of the knuckleheads I sold a pic to left it out in his locker. During a locker inspection our T.I. found the pic. I did pushups every day until I left to make it up. Never did see San Antonio either, I was scrubbing toilets for my stunt that day.

Pic from near El Centro NAS in southern California. 4 Lockheed C-141B Starlifters inbound for a drop zone, circa 1982.

A huge thank you to all you vets for your service.

Wow you got lucky nothing was at stake on those dates (12/83-1/84). Imagine my first supervisor's bad luck. He joined in the last days of 1977, right when the real GI bill ended. He got to Lackland AFB as he thought just in time, but due to the holidays, there was nobody there to swear them in. So he got screwed and had to swear in in 1978, and missed the deadline.

My story:

Active duty Air Force 09-79 Lackland AFB, TX. Basic Military Training
10-79 to 01-80. Lowry AFB Colorado. Aircraft Armaments Systems Specialist, 46230J, FB-111 ( we still had beer machines in the dorm)
01-80 to 06-82. Plattsburgh AFB NY. (A cold one)
06-82 to 06-87. Andersen AFB, Guam.
06-87 to 06-88. Edwards AFB Ca.

Also worked as a contractor/instructor for the Royal Saudi Air Force, 06-92 to 10-98.

Reggie has that white beard thing going on, too. He's named in honor of Reggie White (while he was a Packer) because they're both big, black, and powerful.
