Media suppress the news that Bush lost election to Gore
Sydney Morning Herald ^ | October 22, 2001 | Charles Laurence

The most detailed analysis yet of the contested Florida votes from last year's presidential election - with the potential to question President George Bush's legitimacy - is being withheld by the news organisations that commissioned it.

Results of the inspection of more than 170,000 votes rejected as unreadable in the "hanging chad" chaos of last November's vote count were ready at the end of August.

The study was commissioned early this year by a consortium including The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post and The New York Times and the broadcaster CNN. The cost was more than $A2million.

Now, however, spokesmen for the consortium say that they decided to postpone the story of the analysis by the National Opinion Research Centre at the University of Chicago for lack of resources and lack of interest in the face of the enormous story after the September11 attacks.

Newspapers were saying last week that the final phase of the analysis, counting the 170,000 votes, had been postponed.

"Our belief is that the priorities of the country have changed, and our priorities have changed," said Steven Goldstein, vice-president of corporate communications at Dow Jones, owner of The Wall Street Journal.

Catherine Mathis, a spokeswoman for The New York Times, said: "The consortium agreed that because of the war, because of our lack of resources, we were postponing the vote-count investigation. But this is not final. The intention is to go forward."

However David Podvin, an investigative journalist who runs an independent Web page, Make Them Accountable, said he had been tipped off that the consortium was covering up the results.

He refused to disclose his source other than to describe him as a former media executive whom he knew "as an accurate conduit of information" and who claimed that the consortium "is deliberately hiding the results of its recount because [former Democrat vice-president Al] Gore was the indisputable winner".

He also claims that a New York Times journalist involved in the recount project had told "a former companion" that the Gore victory margin was big enough to create "major trouble for the Bush presidency if this ever gets out".

"The goosiness, the sensitivity, that the press which organised this analysis is now showing to publishing the results and the persistence of questions about the Florida ballots raise questions," said Dr John Mason, a professor of political science at William Paterson University, in New Jersey.

"There is a sensitivity over the legitimacy of this president."

National Opinion Research Centre staff have been puzzled by the idea that the media would lack the resources because, they said, they had computer programs already designed and fitted for the final count.

Sorce: Sydney Morning Herald. Austrailia, where by law, every citizen must vote.

Really? That's the first time I've heard that. What happens if they don't?

I spent some time in Australia. They vote, because the fines are high if they don't, but they can vote for "Mickey Mouse", themselves, or any other nonsense vote.
Requiring people to vote doesn't get an informed electorate. And it doesn't necessarily get votes for legitimate candidates.

"I really love how the article says that the people who "discovered" that Gore should have won are saying that they won't release the info because of the war out of the goodness of their hearts. They're actually doing the smart thing here."

Exactly. They're deliberately planting this so that people will think, "Whoa-- Gore must've won after all, and by a big enough margin to really embarrass Bush! But these people are so magnanimous, so bending over backwards to be fair, that they are not releasing the information. How big of them!"

Yeeccch...will these Gorons stop at nothing?

The 170,000 votes in the article were most probably submitted by three broad catagories of voters. Those handicapped by either stupidity, carelessness or age.

Again does anyone know how Australia handles these three classes of voters? I suspect no better than we do.

Lets roll back the clock to BEFORE election night.
Drudge started bragging how he was not going to wait for the TV media to release VNS polls.
Election Night
Drudge, who lives in FL, "forgets" there are 2 time zones in FL and posts bogus VNS poll results on his site.
Per O'Reilly, they (FOX) "broke" the story on 1st on TV, then all the other networks did.
The TV networks also "forgot" there were 2 time zones in FL.
Result, votes for Bush in FL's 2nd time zone were lost by people who "saw" Gore had won.
People all across the rest of the nation who would have voted for Bush "saw" the same thing.
I was at a friends house election night and while she was looking at the FL state election results site
it showed Bush was ahead, WHILE FOX and all the networks said Gore had won FL.
The Media tried to "give" Gore the election and still now they continue their coverup.

"American Governments try to win wars. American media tries to increase ratings."

On 10/12 I saw FOX NEWS (via Sky News) showing video of Afgan children in hospital
because Taliban says we bombed them. Also video of child being buried because we caused child to starve to death.
And just how many times did anyone see FOX show the wounded or dead USA children of Sept 11th????
Remember what the media did during Viet Nam, showing children being bombed.
Remember the pic of the little girl running and screaming.
How long before the media feed the frenzy of the peaceniks and our service people are again called baby killer?
How long before the media and peaceniks call President Bush a murderer?
If Fox is doing this type of propaganda AGAINST the USA Lord only knows what the other networks are doing.

No more enemy propaganda Fox News!

The democrats tried to steal the election. It is only by the grace of God that we squeaked through. I am sick of this constant whining.

If they were REALLY concerned about how the election came out, they would have looked at some other states.

Well, as far as I am concerned they have tipped their hand. If Gore had gracefully conceded election night, no one would have paid that much attention. But with the long recount battle in Florida, many interesting things surfaced, and the next election will be more fair, because everyone will be watching.

And the media will be watched as well.

The media is spiking the story but not because Gore won more illegal votes. They're doing it because the democrat party tried to disenfranchise military voters, those same voters who are currently jumping out the back of C130's in the dead of night to protect and defend their sorry behinds.

It would be a nightmare for the democrat party and the leftist media knows it.

Um, when is the New York Times et al going to recount all the tossed votes in every single county in the country? I'm sure there's over half a million in Los Angeles County alone that ended up in the garbage because people couldn't figure out how to use the stylus. When is somebody going to get busy counting all those votes, huh? As far as I'm concerned, Diane Feinstein should stay home until it's settled up once and for all whether or not she was re-elected.

I maintain to this day that this is the real reason the left is so upset about Florida 2000: They 'KNOW' they stole enough votes, but they didn't win. That's really got to chap their collective ass.

"And the media will be watched as well."

It just really bothers me that the media NEVER mentions all the potential votes they cost President Bush that night.
I'm an Independent who voted for President Bush, based upon what he said during the debates.
I did not rely on the media to make my decision.
And just as a side note: When you see the anti-war protests in DC and elsewhere,
do you ever see the national media show the pro-American side?
Odd how DC FReeps these but Fox and everyone else "looks" the other way.

This would not make any difference. The hanging chads, undervotes, overvotes, no votes, were not legal votes. They can carry on all they want about this, and they have, Bush won the election after the first mandatory recount. The rest of the circus was all illegal, just as the Supreme Court ruled.
Seems odd that the other zillion recounts by other media had Bush winning no matter what. Proves this was a subjective bunch of divining garbage designed to find "votes" for Gore where there were none.
