Media suppress the news that Bush lost election to Gore
Sydney Morning Herald ^ | October 22, 2001 | Charles Laurence

Posted on 10/21/2001 6:06:48 PM PDT by John Jorsett

The most detailed analysis yet of the contested Florida votes from last year's presidential election - with the potential to question President George Bush's legitimacy - is being withheld by the news organisations that commissioned it.

Results of the inspection of more than 170,000 votes rejected as unreadable in the "hanging chad" chaos of last November's vote count were ready at the end of August.

The study was commissioned early this year by a consortium including The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post and The New York Times and the broadcaster CNN. The cost was more than $A2million.

Now, however, spokesmen for the consortium say that they decided to postpone the story of the analysis by the National Opinion Research Centre at the University of Chicago for lack of resources and lack of interest in the face of the enormous story after the September11 attacks.

Newspapers were saying last week that the final phase of the analysis, counting the 170,000 votes, had been postponed.

"Our belief is that the priorities of the country have changed, and our priorities have changed," said Steven Goldstein, vice-president of corporate communications at Dow Jones, owner of The Wall Street Journal.

Catherine Mathis, a spokeswoman for The New York Times, said: "The consortium agreed that because of the war, because of our lack of resources, we were postponing the vote-count investigation. But this is not final. The intention is to go forward."

However David Podvin, an investigative journalist who runs an independent Web page, Make Them Accountable, said he had been tipped off that the consortium was covering up the results.

He refused to disclose his source other than to describe him as a former media executive whom he knew "as an accurate conduit of information" and who claimed that the consortium "is deliberately hiding the results of its recount because [former Democrat vice-president Al] Gore was the indisputable winner".

He also claims that a New York Times journalist involved in the recount project had told "a former companion" that the Gore victory margin was big enough to create "major trouble for the Bush presidency if this ever gets out".

"The goosiness, the sensitivity, that the press which organised this analysis is now showing to publishing the results and the persistence of questions about the Florida ballots raise questions," said Dr John Mason, a professor of political science at William Paterson University, in New Jersey.

"There is a sensitivity over the legitimacy of this president."

National Opinion Research Centre staff have been puzzled by the idea that the media would lack the resources because, they said, they had computer programs already designed and fitted for the final count.

Sorce: Sydney Morning Herald. Austrailia, where by law, every citizen must vote.

Really? That's the first time I've heard that. What happens if they don't?

I met a couple of Aussies while waiting to rent a car on a holiday in France. They told me that if you don't vote you have to pay a pretty hefty fine. I don't remember the exact amount but I believe they said 500 pounds.

I assume your reply was not sarcastic. Do you know how they handle the functionally illiterate in Sydney? Pictures? Party symbols? Free cigarettes to induce a short course in politically correct voting proceedures?

Barf Alert! - Make Them Accountable.com is a horribly biased web page. The person quoted in the story is only a contributor to the website. This is according to "in story" editor notes at the site by a man named Caro, who says he owns the site.

I hope we're not giving liberals over here an idea. Maybe motor voter is just incrementalism before they make everyone here vote. Ugh, we would rue that day.

Anyone know why this story hasn't gotten more traction?

This probably also has to do with why that Democratic operative got caught with that voting machine in his trunk.

And also why they won every close state, Presidential AND Senate, well after voting hours were done.

"How many votes do we need? Hillary, plug in the Vote-a-matic!"

"I assume your reply was not sarcastic."

Correct.

"Do you know how they handle the functionally illiterate in Sydney? Pictures? Party symbols? Free cigarettes to induce a short course in politically correct voting proceedures?"

All I know is that all are required to vote. If you have additional information, please share. It would be very interesting to compare Austrailia to the US.

It is certain that agore got the ex-felon vote, the currently incarcerated felon vote, the illegal alien vote, the legal alien vote, the dead vote, the pro-Castro cuban vote, the welfare vote, the femizombie vote, the lawyer vote, the Puerto Rican terrorist supporter vote, the repeating voter vote, the incompetent never-voted-before vote, and the easilly conned vote. He may have been denied the military vote, but we will never know because he had THOSE VOTES thrown out. Gee, the Democrats even had their own private voting machines, it's a shame that after all that effort agore won't be able to announce his victory. (end sarcasm)

We need to go back and check those 1960 returns in Illinois and Texas. If that proves that Nixon really won, we can invalidate the Kennedy presidency and eliminate the Bay of Pigs fiasco, the Cuban missile crisis, the Kennedy assassination, the Vietnam War, and (because Nixon wouldn't have still been in office in 1972) the Watergate burglary.

Worrying about invalidly-cast ballots in last year's presidential election is about equally useful. The only thing useful at this point would be trying to figure out how to make it harder to commit election fraud in future elections, but too many people have a stake in keeping things the way they are.

If we scour the Web for long enough, we will find an article that says Gore won in a landslide. History is in the eye of the beholder.

Australians who don't show up to vote are fined in an amount equivalent to a traffic violation. Exceptions are made for those out of the country or otherwise physically unable to get to the polls. They are also free to turn in a blank or spoiled ballot. Still, the turnout seldom goes over 75-50%.

Anyone who has dealt with Aussies knows a favorite local past-time is bullshiting foreigners. First of all, Australians use dollars, not pounds. Secondly, the fine is about the equivalent of about US$13.

Source= Australian Election Commission

What happens if I do not vote?

Initially the Australian Electoral Commission will write to all apparent non-voters requesting that they either provide a reason for their failure to vote or pay a $20 penalty.

If, within 21 days, the apparent non-voter fails to reply, cannot provide a valid and sufficient reason or declines to pay the penalty, then prosecution proceedings may be instigated. If the matter is dealt with in court and the person is found guilty, he or she may be fined up to $50 plus court costs.
