I live a short distance from Seymour, Wisconsin, the "home of the hamburger". It was invented in 1885 by a Charles Nagreen, and served at the county fair.

My hometown of Appleton was the home of Senator Joe McCarty, the childhood home of Harry Houdini, and is the headquarters of the John Birch Society. Lest you think we are entirely conservative, this is also the home of Greta Van Susteren (sorry). Appleton was the site of the world's first hydroelectric plant, as well as the first home to be lit by electric lights.

Other illustrious Appletonians include Rocky Bleier (you may have heard of him--he went to the same high school I did), novelist Edna Ferber, and actor Willem Dafoe. Campbell Scott attended my alma mater, Lawrence University, and Harrison Ford is Ripon College's most famous dropout.

Very heavy Czech and German population down that way. If I'm not mistaken, your area is heavy on German heritage, is it not? Perhaps some Czech, too?

I'm surrounded by Germans, Poles and Dutch. I'm about the only Italian in the phone book. I'm probably the only Sicilian Jew in the state of Wisconsin!

I thought the Germans had something to do with it? Never thought of putting it on a bun, did they?

That means not only don't they know the difference between a calzone and a stromboli, they don't even care. Jeannette, on the other hand is Italian central. The local grocery store doesn't even bother with calling the aisle "ethnic" foods, it just says "Italian." You can't run for office if your name doesn't end in a vowel and start with a "De" or "Di."

Are any of you guys still the of the "religion" you were brought up with as a child? At what age did you change? This is interesting.

I parted ways with Catholicism at the end of my freshman year in college, and returned about 18 years later. I spent most of the years in between years practicing karmic yoga. AOG was very instrumental in my taking a second look at Christianity. At some point I realized I was being called back to Catholicism, and did everything but chuck pea soup with my anti-Catholic diatribes until I finally submitted about three months later.

So, you see, there's hope for you guys yet! : )
