The Neverending Story
An ongoing debate on Scripture, Tradition, History and Interpretation.

Statesmen may plan and speculate for liberty, but it is religion and morality alone which can establish the principles upon which freedom can securely stand. The only foundation of a free constitution is pure virtue. - John Adams

Hey al! lookee here

The latest marriage of technology and convenience will put frazzled commuters in the drive-through fast lane at five area McDonald's restaurants. After a motorist registers, windshield-mounted tags used mostly to pay tolls in North Texas can be used to pay for that behind-the-wheel breakfast, lunch or dinner.

The tag experiment will last at least six months at two Dallas and three Plano McDonald's locations.

By the way, you have insulted the great Apostle of God, John, by calling uninspired "historians" his "contemporaries".

Judas was a contemporary of Jesus.

Herod was a contemporary of Jesus.

Pilate was a contemporary of Jesus.

Did I just insult Jesus?

If you don't know what "contemporary" means, look it up.

Now if they could only get something like that to insert in your right-hand or forehead so you can make purchases anywhere without having to remember your wallet, or purses for you ladies.

I think he just wants us to recognize that the prophetic text used for the Virgin Birth is on shaky ground linguistically.

So do you think Matthew's use of the "virgin birth" is on shaky ground linuistically?

I never said I hunt. I support the rights of others to hunt, but do not personally do so.

When I first came on the forum we discussed being members of the NRA, you told me what kind of rifle you had, and living in the hills of Pa, I just assumed you hunted animals, and not people.

LOL. That's not how the Church works. You support it, not the other way around

That was not an answer, are you reimbursed in any way for the work you do on this forum?

The fact that you think enough of me to ask the question is a lot. After nearly a year of conversing with people here, you are still the same paranoid person who believes all Catholics lie all the time. It's sad.

Call it intuition and from reading CE and New Advent, about one of your popes who argued the point that the ends do justify the means, and if you haven't heard of it, I or someone else will try to locate it for you, but please don't make us go through the search if you already know of what I speak.

I never said you lie all the time, just the image you have portrayed yourself to be.

Not surprised by the locations of the test market.

As if this will speed anything up. The customer still has to wait for the food. Yet another reason to avoid McD's at all costs.

You think I could possibly find anybody to pay me for what I offer in here? :-)

I guess I can kind of see vmatt's point. If someone were to attempt to link me in any way, shape, or form to Bill Clinton, like saying he was my contemporary, I would be a little insulted. ;^)

No. I think it's pretty clear what Matthew 1:24 and following say.

How is saying that Irenaeus and Polycarp were contemporaries of John, meaning they were alive at about the same time John was, an insult to John? Do you have a different definition of "contemporary"?

I stand corrected if that is all you were implying. Angelo rubbed me wrong with his comments about Paul. Made me sick to my stomach and for any terse words or criticisms I humbly apologize. God bless and keep all.

American Heritage Dictionary:

ETYMOLOGY: Medieval Latin contemporrius : Latin com-, com- + Latin tempus, tempor-, time + Latin -rius, -ary. OTHER FORMS: con·tempo·rari·ly (-tmp-râr-l) —ADVERBp> SYNONYMS: contemporary, contemporaneous, simultaneous, synchronous, concurrent, coincident, concomitant These adjectives mean existing or occurring at the same time. Contemporary is used more often of persons, contemporaneous of events and facts: The composer Salieri was contemporary with Mozart. A rise in interest rates is often contemporaneous with an increase in inflation. Simultaneous more narrowly specifies occurrence of events at the same time: The activists organized simultaneous demonstrations in many major cities. Synchronous refers to correspondence of events in time over a short period: The dancers executed a series of synchronous movements. Concurrent implies parallelism in character or length of time: The mass murderer was given three concurrent life sentences. Coincident applies to events occurring at the same time without implying a relationship: “The resistance to the Pope's authority . . . is pretty nearly coincident with the rise of the Ottomans” (John Henry Newman). Concomitant refers to coincidence in time of events so clearly related that one seems attendant on the other: He is an adherent of Freud's theories and had a concomitant belief in the efficacy of psychoanalysis.

USAGE NOTE: When contemporary is used in reference to something in the past, its meaning is not always clear. Contemporary critics of Shakespeare may mean critics in his time or critics in our time. When the context does not make the meaning clear, misunderstanding can be avoided by using phrases such as critics in Shakespeare's time or modern critics.

Ya right. That's why you need 11 pages of explanation from Jerome. :-)

Well since you are your own boss you could tweak your job description a bit to read "Steven: CEO, CFO, Chief Bottle Washer, and Defender of the Faith". ;^)

angelo, do you have a link to an online Talmud? If not can you recommend a good hard copy?

There is no such online Talmud. There is not even a translation of the Talmud into English. Such a feat would be near-impossible, given the near-shorthand writing style used. A copy of the Talmud is around 20 volumes of teachings and commentary.

There is a good introduction to the teachings of the Talmud that I recommended to Steven last night: Everyman's Talmud : The Major Teachings of the Rabbinic Sages. You can probably find it in the 'Judaica' section at your local Barnes & Noble.

Oh, and what translation of the TANAKH do you use? Or are you using the original Hebrew?

I use Jps Hebrew-English Tanakh : The Traditional Hebrew Text and the New Jps Translation. When I'm posting scripture quotes, I usually use an online RSV, unless I feel that the JPS translation renders the passage more accurately.

By the way, I wasn't alluding to that argument. I should have said do you think Matthew's usage of the "virgin" word as opposed to "young woman" was on shaky ground linguistically.

As if this will speed anything up. The customer still has to wait for the food. Yet another reason to avoid McD's at all costs.

And the chances of the food being correct are abysmal as well. Just last night, we had to call and complain to a fast food joint when my wife bought us some dinner home. She is alergic to a preservative used in cheeses and can't eat it or she'll need to go to the hospital for an adrenaline shot. She foolishly didn't check her sandwich before she left, and sure enough there was cheese all over it.

These kids today take no pride in their work. We need a good war to ship 'em off to when they screw up too much.

I may have mentioned my father- and brother-in law who are avid hunters of deer, in season or not, bag limits-be-damned. I have firearms merely for protection.

That was not an answer, are you reimbursed in any way for the work you do on this forum?

No, I am not. Not that you believe me anyway.

First, congratulations on helping Havoc kill that strawman. Way to go.

Sorry, didn't create one and didn't kill one. Christ didn't leave us leaderless - nor did He appoint anyone to serve in His capacity, nor did He name any successor or secretary, or Coregent or any such nonsense as that. It isn't in the scriptures. It isn't even HINTED at. Nor is the need to do such a thing either hinted at or implied. Prove your legends or don't waste your time with them. That will stop you being annoyed when no one likes the same fanciful stories you like.. or at least that they don't give them the same weight. I knew at time of telling that there was no talking rabbit that went through the hole in the hedge; but, you guys wanna say the rabbit was a Papist and could vouche for the 'chair of peter'.

Funny that Cardinal Newman would show up in that definition.

It would appear that the Holy Spirit inspired Matthew to write "virgin." So I believe it. And the testimony of Matthew 1:25 concurs.

Hmmm. What did you say?

Jesus didn't pick a successor because no one can succeed Him. He isn't dead. Long live the King!

This is making the implication that Catholics believe that Peter and the popes are "successors" to Jesus. And that we beleive that Jesus is dead.

That's a strawman, dude. The Pope is not a successor to Jesus and we do not teach that Jesus is dead.
