Mayor Rudolph Giuliani rejected a $10 million donation to the Twin Towers fund from a Saudi prince today after learning that the billionaire followed the gift with a press release that stated that Israelis slaughtered Palestinians daily and blamed American policies toward Israel for the attacks on the World Trade Center.

Alas, the Mayor overreacted. Claiming that U.S. policies in the Middle East "led to" the attack is nowhere near the same as claiming the attack was "justified" or "morally equivalent" to something. The Prince made clear that he considered the attack "a tremendous crime".

Understanding the motives of the attackers is essential to the prevention of future attacks. If they were motivated by anger at U.S. policies in the Middle East then we ought to find out why. If those policies are unjust and harmful they should be amended. It's the right thing to do.

The people who've payed attention already know, plenty of people don't seem to care or can't see the obvious and those who think US policy decisions should always be made in Israel evidently worry about the US only as an afterthought.
