WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Bush authorized on Friday a payment on the United States' back dues to the United Nations, and said he hopes the money will enhance America's "close bond" with the international body.
Bush signed a Senate bill authorizing the second of three payments of the arrears. Bush said the payment fulfills the commitment he made to U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan in March.

The problem wasn't that we didn't have the money to spend on our military, the problem was getting the Democrats to agree to it. It isn't a zero sum game.
I'm glad we have adults running the executive branch when we have tens of thousands of American boys about to risk their lives in what may be the bloodiest war since the World War II beach invasions.
Ah, I see. Paying a commitment previously made is 'checkbook diplomacy'.
I do not agree with the UN. I think we should pull out. I just do not require my leaders to agree with me on every issue to support their leadership, as you apparently do.
My position remains as it was. I support my President. You don't, and you never will, regardless of how fine a President he is or how successfully he carries out his duties as leader of the free world, because you will require him to agree with everything you think.
I am not that arrogant. You obviously are.
You keep hoping that, don't you Ricky?? Sheesh!
You keep hoping that, don't you Ricky?? Sheesh!
I voted for him and thought he would be a good President.
I was wrong. Why would I want him to fail since I campaigned for him?
Paying a commitment at this time is a wee bit obvious. Sorry you can't see that. You are an exceptional patriot to put so much faith in career politicians.
"Ah, I see. Paying a commitment previously made is 'checkbook diplomacy'."
You seem to be ignoring "the Deal" that was made, are you not? The "Deal" was this ----"the United States would pay $926 million in back dues if the United Nations reformed its huge bureaucracy and cut the U.S. share of its financial burden."
What I see is that we supposedly got our percentage cut. That is just on Operation of the U.N. But how much has the 'budget' gone up to cover our reduced percentage, and are ALL of the other countries paying their dues? Or do they just take some increased aid from us and pay that into the kitty?
How much REFORMING of the U.N. bureaucracy has occurred?
How about military action and all areas supporting it? We Pay nearly ALL of that. Nope, there's a shell game going here, and we're the Rubes.
No! You've got to fit in! Remember ---"Airhead is GOOD!!!" (now's a good time to comment on sweat, tush, smile). C'mon, you CAN DO IT!
If the $582 Million saves just 10 American soldiers' lives it will be worth it.
Funny, the billions of dollars and food sent as humanitarian aid for years to numerous countries and nations didn't seem to help a damn bit did it! And what did we get from the "united" nations in return?
It might save us billions in military costs if it makes the difference in whether certain countries allow us to use their ports and air bases.
Ah, you are one of those kind. We don't really "need" cooperation, it is just "nice to have it" eh?
You sicken me somewhat rod.
