Recent Changes - Problem Thread I
Posted on 09/30/2001 2:59:33 AM PDT by John Robinson
Many technical changes are taking place here at Free Republic. While these changes are taking place, I will run a "Recent Changes - Problem Thread". The purpose of this thread is to document problems, bugs, and general difficulty which may be related to these changes. Comments and criticism are expressly welcome.
Issues
- Author, Source, Keyword searches are currently disabled.
- Topic listings are currently disabled.
- Occassional difficulty submitting posts.
Desires
- Return of the E-mail field on replies. I am deciding if it is worth the visual clutter.
- More distinction between posting a reply and sending a private reply.
- More space between Preview and Post buttons on Reply.

I haven't used netscape for 3 years and don't miss it at all. You want some fancy exclusive FR buttons for post reply and preview? I made a gallery button on my profile page, and a red, white and blue Freeople graphic on the ongoing Freeople thread. I could make something for the buttons here if you like.

Netscape (4.7) style sheets are fouled up; downright unreliable. I couldn't see past comment #55 on this thread using my style sheet, it simply would not display anything.I HATE NETSCAPE! HATE IT, HATE IT, HATE IT!
Same thing, so Nutscape 4.x users have but two choices; kill the style sheets (it does bring the thread back, but at the cost of all formatting, including the highlighting I can't figure out how to enable), or change to either Internut Exploder (NEVER!), Nutscape 6.1 (IMHO, it's reliable-enough to use, and that's what I've currently got), or Mozilla (quite compatible with everything, but it's still officially a beta).

Thanks. I'm not sure if I want graphic buttons, depends on how well supported they are. I don't think they'll work for everyone.

Mozilla-based code is probably the way to go. Did I mention I HATE MSIE? HATE IT, HATE IT, HATE IT!
It has just as many stupid bugs as Netscape. But since 90% of the browsers are MSIE, its bugs become readily apparent.
And just when I think I have the HTML perfected, Netscape pukes.

Is
this (a program to allow Freepers to maintain a personal image gallery for their use in postings) making any progress?
To: michigander
It hasn't made any progress since that posting, though the only thing stopping its implementation is a week of dedicated coding.

I have a problem... When I click on a thread that was posted from the NY Times, the new window doesn't open up. It locks up explorer and doesn't let me close it. Then, if I open up a new window, and start looking around again, and leave the locked up window open, after a while(sometimes a long while) it just unjams or something, and the thread will open, and the latest posts unjams too. Very wierd. And it seems to be only NY Times articles.

Just kidding!
Thanks for the update.
To: abner
Sounds like it might be a NY Times DNS issue. MSIE will lock up under certain situations involving DNS.

norary Serb are fine folks, but our interests do not overlap nearly as much as our "self searches" do.
...just had to try out these new reply features being discussed.

Okay, where can I find descriptions of the lists? What do I get in return? Re-enabling onMouseOver? hehe.
To: sirgawain
You can think about it all you want; you just can't do it <VBG>
Now if I were heartless, I'd say you can't even think about it

Another thing that would be neat is if you could see the "New mail message" thing inside a thread, like at the top when you refreshed or something, so even during a long heated argument, you could see when you get new messages.
To: John Robinson
please, please return the email field on replies!! i LOVED that feature!
also, it is rather cumbersome to have the post reply button on the bottom of the message box rather than on top like before.

Just to note about the future ability: all past screen names will be listed in your profile, along with the range of dates the screen name was in use. And, for X (7-30?) number of days after the name change, your "former" will be printed next to your current screen name. That will be done to discourage people from "hit and runs". That's cool - I've been wanting to change my screen name from my nickname (Gabz) to me full name (Gabrielle) but have not wanted to lose my "member since" date. I'll be watching for that change.
I love the brief HTML hints below the posting screen - I know those codes, but my husband has been real hesitant to post because of the need for HTML - he's been registered and has been lurking for about a year, maybe now he will start to post!!!!!!!!

Please put the "Public E-Mail" line back in the "Reply" form

Is it still ok to use commas to separate names?
To: sirgawain
You'll need to convert your bump lists to use semi-colons. It may be a pain now, but this is the first step to a much more efficient system that has far more advantages than the current system.

Maybe
this will cheer you up. Fire up the preview and load the thread. Netscape 4.77 has no problems loading the thread itself, though the style sheets could still use a bit of tweaking (fr_quote needs a border color; gray works for me).

Hey, out of curiosity, will the "filter" tag work corectly with the .fr_body class? it just seems to ignore that even with my IE6. P.s. - It didnt ask me if i was sure i wanted to post 12 times...you might need to look into that. ;)
