Recent Changes @ FreeRepublic UPDATED

Posted on 09/28/2001 5:34:51 PM PDT by John Robinson

There is some odd problem with Netscape and italics getting stuck on. It's something to do with the style sheets, I believe. So I am killing the default style sheet.

See the original thread if you would like to install your own custom style sheet.

"Thanks for putting the margin all the way to the left. It's much easier to read over here."

I'll second that. Even triple that.

Perhaps you ought to post your "background" pictures on your web site so we can all down load them and try out your FR "makeover" for ourselves! It looks great!

By the way, I love your screen name!

Looks like [em] is back to italians. My HTML editor uses [em] for italians. Imagine my initial horror when all those italians turned yellow.

I'm sputtering. Now THAT is funny. Could be the wine, dunno -- can't seem to type worth a damn -- haven't a clue what time it is (West Coast military time does not compute) -- but I needed to thank you for the laugh.

Done! I included a few instructions there for people unfamiliar with path issues. No one should have any problems. I'm using IE 6. If anyone gets strange resutls with IE 5 or IE 5.5, let me know.

If you come up with someting cool, you can flag me or FRmail me. Maybe we should start a gallery of stylesheets and screen captures so people can get a better idea of the possibilities.

Wow... I just downloaded then installed your customizations... it's really neat! I love it! Thank you very much! I think I might try to play around with the font a little bit to make it more readable on my side, but, otherwise, it's absolutely beautiful.

And, thank you, Jim and John Robinson, for making it all possible! You're all the greatest!

just had to quote that part again...

Glad you liked it, clikker. Which version of IE are you using?

steveegg: I'll have to try translating that to Netscape 4.77.
Did you have any luck getting the effects to work with Netscape?

Spent the afternoon working on trying to get a new DSL connection working (long story, don't need to post it), so I didn't have a chance to yet. Suppose it's a good thing, because JohnRob and you changed things again. Anyway, will try later today.

Have you considered giving us IE users (the vast majority) a different icon in our Favorites menus?

All you need is to add the following HTML on your web pages:
<HEAD>
  <LINK REL="SHORTCUT ICON" HREF="http://www.freerepublic.com/FRicon.ico">
  <TITLE>My Title</TITLE>
</HEAD>
If someone would take the FR logo and make a 16x16 icon of it, we could have custom bookmark icons. A neat and quick feature. I think it works all the way back to IE4.

More info here: Customizing your website's Icon in IE5.

[like you don't already have enough to do...]

Netscape 4.77 doesn't support the 3-d effect, and there's a couple of quirks with margins that I'll have to try to work out later. Also, the URL format for stored files in Netscape is significantly different ("file///c|dir1/dir2/file)" instead of the normal convention supported by IE. As I don't have Netscape 6, I can't verify anything there.

Managed to get things done before I left for church. Anyway, here's the list of changes that have to happen for things to work close right for Netscape 4.x users:

-The "margin-left", "A:link", "A:visited", "A:hover" and "border-style" lines must be deleted because of incompatibilities with Netscape 4.7x
-The margin-right value has to be 0 (note to John, with the DIVs, specifying a margin other than 0 fouls up Netscape 4.7x, and I suspect does the same to the rest of Netscape 4.x)
-The url convention for local files in Netscape 4.x is radically different. Instead of simply pointing to the file as usual, c:\dir\file, you must use file///c|dir/file

You won't get the 3-d effect, but the remainder works.

If you FRmail me your stylesheet, I'll put it up at my GeoCities web site for others to use.

There is not, to my knowledge, either.

>I think I'm doing a very good job of balancing freedom of

You are.

Thanks.

I am just a stickler for the rules, that's all. Using an element of structure--BLOCKQUOTE--to impose an element of style--paragraph widths--runs counter to the vision of the W3C. Unfortunately, due to the ignorance/stupidity/laziness of browser vendors in regards to comprehensively implementing the W3C's standards, we are forced into using workarounds to ensure compatibility--like using tables for layout. I posted my template here, in case anyone should find it useful.

I retract my earlier assessment of server side personal style sheets--it is a Very Good Idea, as it is an enhancement of personal freedom.

E-mail-bump. I guess I'll have to download Netscape 6 now to see which version of the GWB template they need to download.

I've updated my website with your new stylesheet now for users of Netscape 4.77 to try out.

Thanks, Steve.

Not a problem. Two things; the screen capture is in the mail, and NS 6, with the excpetion of having to use the old NS url convention, displays the page correctly with the IE version of the style sheet.
