IRVING, Tex., Sept. 14. Two Men with box cutters, hair dye and a large amount of cash who were seized by federal authorities on an Amtrack train in Fort Worth on Wednesday remained in custody today for immmigration violations, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said....
The authorities confirmed that the two men were flying to San Antonio from Newark when their plane made a stopover in St. Louis on Tuesday. After federal officials halted air traffic in response to Tuesday's hijackings, the men continued by train toward San Antonio until they were taken into custody during a routine drug patrol, officials said.

And what, pray tell, were they hoping to hit from San Antonio?

I would imagine Dallas/Ft. Worth airport. A major airport if you live in the south. You pretty much have to go through there or Atlanta to get anywhere.

**I would imagine Dallas/Ft. Worth airport. **

Why do that? Under their scheme, large international airports are their mission launchpads. That would take one of their starting points out of commission...

DFW is a LONG way from San Antonio, and in the wrong direction. If I were to take a wild guess, I'd say the South Texas Nuclear Project was the ultimate destination, near Palacios (which is still a pretty far piece from San Antonio). Within the city, there's also a little biomedical research going on at UTSA Medical Science Center, South Texas Medical Center, Southwest Primate Reserach Center, Lackland AFB, and (perhaps?) Southwest Research Institute.

I once heard a story about a DNR ranger happening up on some good old boys around a campfire one night, and he spotted a few items around them. He said something to the effect of, "Boys, when you see flour, eggs and sugar, you pretty much conclude somebody's bakin' a cake. Now what I see here are rifles, a couple of Q-beams and buck lure. You boys are doing some baking tonight, and somebody here better start talkin' to me about it right now."

These guys stick out like a sore thumb everywhere except major cities.

Thank God

Gee, thanks a lot. I live in one of those "major cities" -- what are we supposed to do?

...just be comforted by the fact that you "non-major-city-dwellers" can easily spot the terrorists? So much for us all being Americans...

I have to agree with you. Now that we know cooperating will not save any lives, I find it highly unlikely that any group of passengers would ever allow themselves to be hijacked again. If the hijackers don't outnumber the passengers and crew by at least 3 to 1, those hijackers will never live to accomplish their mission.

The South Texas Nuclear Project does sound like a tempting target but it's not really close to any population centers. Would Three Mile Island be a more inviting nuke to hit?

I don't get the primate center angle unless they're trying to line up dates with more body hair than they have.

The only attraction of the Primate Center that I can think of is that quite a bit of virus research is done there. I also recall seeing a newspaper account some time about about an ultra-secure facility for biomedical research at either UTSA or South Texas Medical (can't remember which). IIRC, it 's one of just several in the nation certified to work with the deadliest pathogens.
