Bush's Faustian Deal With the Taliban
Los Angeles Times ^ | May 22, 2001 | Robert Scheer

Edited on 09/03/2002 4:49:19 AM PDT by Jim Robinson. [history]

Enslave your girls and women, harbor anti-U.S. terrorists, destroy every vestige of civilization in your homeland, and the Bush administration will embrace you. All that matters is that you line up as an ally in the drug war, the only international cause that this nation still takes seriously.

That's the message sent with the recent gift of $43 million to the Taliban rulers of Afghanistan, the most virulent anti-American violators of human rights in the world today. The gift, announced last Thursday by Secretary of State Colin Powell, in addition to other recent aid, makes the U.S. the main sponsor of the Taliban and rewards that "rogue regime" for declaring that opium growing is against the will of God. So, too, by the Taliban's estimation, are most human activities, but it's the ban on drugs that catches this administration's attention.

And I am to blame my own government for attempting to lessen that number?

You imbecile. It was America's aid that caused that number.

How about this proposition: Instead of innuendo and "wink, winks," how about you accusers bring us PROOF of where the money went.

According to the person heading the efforts, the money went into things like 65 tons of wheat, money to UN, money to CARE, etc.

I often oppose foreign aid. But these accusations brought by Robert Scheer are offered without proof.

Bring facts and convince me. Stuff from 1985 not relevant.

Otherwise, I'll believe Powell over Scheer.

Do you actually believe Scheer over Powell? You can't be serious. Do you believe everything Scheer writes? Do you understand his reputation and past history praising the likes of the progressive North Korean leadership? Have you read the article by his former buddies at Ramparts? Read it at frontpagemag.com.

If you want to ally yourself with Scheer, take yourself to motherjones.com or thenation.com.

In this regard, Alfred McCoy's study confirms that within two years of the onslaught of the CIA operation in Afghanistan, "the Pakistan-Afghanistan borderlands became the world's top heroin producer, supplying 60 percent of US demand.

Keep your head in the sand. We did this to ourselves. The U.S. paid and trained Osama bin Laden to kill our own citizens. The U.S. funded the Taliban which in turn stepped up it's heroin production and sold this heroin to U.S. buyers.

The real question is, did the CIA perhaps help transport this heroin or create open channels in order to appease the Taliban and create a secret revenue stream?

Wake up.

Really. How interesting. We trained and supplied the Taliban. That is a fact. But it isn't relevant now because it is an extremely inconvenient fact for you War Party promoters to face.

Well, I admit I was not clear or maybe not accurate on a couple of things.

First, the $43 million was just one deposit. The US has actually been sending over $100 million per year to Afghanistan as aid. But this aid is ok because it goes to the people, not the ruling party, the Teliban.

Now I know some of you are saying, "Wait, how can this be? We have a well established and time-tested strategy of withholding aid to the common people in Iraq and Cuba so that they will throw their scummy leaders out." Well, it is obvious that you do not understand politics and ought to be on a different forum -- like gardening or somethin.

Further you say, "Why send them all this food when we are going to kill them anyway (collateral civilian causualties don't matter -- according to what I read from the Freepers)?" You got me there. Does seem to be a waste. Just gonna make them heavier when we have to clean up the place.

The Taliban steals the Foreign Aid (What?! Government officials steal?! Whouldathunkit!!) for its own purposes.

See #48.

But it is grotesque for a U.S. official, James P. Callahan, director of the State Department's Asian anti-drug program, to describe the Taliban's special methods in the language of representative democracy: "The Taliban used a system of consensus-building," Callahan said after a visit with the Taliban, adding that the Taliban justified the ban on drugs "in very religious terms."

If you really want to vomit check this out. Today, Colin Powell announced that we would be lifting sanctions against Pakistan and providing them with 20 million in aid. The article is on your sidebar.

It was Pakistan's ISI that acted as the go-between for the U.S. and Osama bin Laden in the 80's.

U.S. foreign policy is sheer insanity.

Hey, mouthy, have you gone down to enlist yet? If not, why not? Until YOU are ready to put YOUR life on the line, your comments and bullsh!t are as out of place as CJ's.

Dude, can you please check that link? I get a nameserver error. I am trying to get Kim Murphy at the LA Times to cover this. I am compiling this info to see if they'll run with it.

The India Express article was particularly chilling to me when I first read it a few hours ago.

Had I read it in May or June, I would have thought that their terming of State-Dep't/DEA funneling of foreign aid to Afghanistan as "appeasement towards Hitler" was typical Indian hyperbole anchored in their own Hindu/Muslim clashes.

After Tuesday, no more. The India Express proved to be horrifically prescient.

This Frankenstein monster has now burned down one of our villages, mercilessly slaughtering our men, women and children by the thousands. Now, we're going to have to send American troops into harm's way to kill this Frankenstein -- and since the cancer apparently has metastasized into the entire Afghan political apparatus (Bin Laden was appointed the Taliban's chief military commander, fer cryin' out loud), I really expect that nothing less than the complete elimination of the Afghan governmental apparatus, the liquidation of the Taliban State as a political entity, will suffice to root it out. Perhaps when every single government building in Afghanistan is a smoking ruin and every single Taliban Jihadist is dead, the Afghan citizenry will be able to from a new Government without Jihadist terrorists running the entire show -- maybe so, maybe not.

Meanwhile, the insane Internationalist empire-builders try to hide the record of their creation of this monster, wrap themselves in a bloodied American flag and cry out in mock indignation, "How dare you question our good intentions!!"

Of such is the Road to Hell paved....

I was not aware I was needed to drop a nuke on the terrorist. However if this escalates into a war between nations I will surely enlist. Until then, I have people that depend on me to feed their families.

How in the world can we be claiming to be going after the "real terrorists" when it was the ISI (Pakistan) who was the liaison between the CIA and Bin Laden in 85?

Pakistan is the only nation with full diplomatic relations with Afghanistan. How in the world is this going to do any good?

What are our leaders thinking?
