LOS ANGELES (AP) - The head of the Los Angeles Unified School District has told the school board that he wants to leave before his contract expires.

In a closed meeting several weeks ago, Superintendent Roy Romer told the Board of Education "that he would like them to find his replacement by September or October, but that he would certainly stay until an appropriate replacement is found," district spokesman Stephanie Brady said.

He became head of the 727,000-student district in 2000.

The district did not indicate why Romer, 77, wanted to leave before his contract expires in June 2007.

However, there has been increasing tension in recent months between Romer and board members. Also, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has said he wants to take control of the school system.

Under Romer, the overcrowded district has begun building or opened about 160 new campuses and modernized many others.

He also has pushed for completion of the Belmont High School project, a massive downtown school complex. Construction halted after it was found that the land sits atop an earthquake fault and an oil field that contains explosive methane.

I don't know, but I can take a guess.

Hmm... Does this mean he was effective? Doing your job well is typically the best way to get on the bad side of the school board and local politics. Is this the case?

As much as I dislike Romer's politics I cant say that I disagree with his decision.

Romer probably heard the same rumor that we all have. The last Amtrak train is scheduled to leave Ciduad de Los Angeles the day after Cinco de Mayo.

No, romer has been part of the 'Rat machine for a long time, he's just caught in a power play and too old to put up fighting V and his horde is my suspicion.

He has probably had his fill and finally decided to just move on.

he was a 3 term gov in Colorado before he came out here.

Roy probably wants to spend more time with his mistress B.J. Thornberry.

Belmont High School, AKA

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has said he wants to take control of the school system.

"Roy probably wants to spend more time with his mistress B.J. Thornberry."

Well, that answered one question I had.

Viagrossa, is a jerk. Pompous and corrupt to the core. He is going to destroy Los Angeles, and the people who put him in power are too ignorant to realize it.

All the illegal aliens coming here for a better life, have wasted their time.

I hope he isn't getting a wild hair to try and run for Colorado governor again.

He's 77, I don't think that's in his future plans. ;-)

Time for him to spend some of his pension.
