NEW YORK (AP) -- The man who's probably best known as Lou Grant's boss has died. Mason Adams played Charlie Hume in the television show "Lou Grant" in the 1980s -- a spin-off from "The Mary Tyler Moore Show." He was nominated for three Emmys in that role.

Adams was also known as the voice behind the Smucker's jelly commercials, voicing the tag-line: "With a name like Smucker's, it has to be good."

Adams worked in film as well. He had several small roles in movies like "F/X" in 1986 and "Houseguest" in 1995, and worked steadily on stage in his later years. His daughter says he died of natural causes at his Manhattan home on Tuesday. He was 86.

His voice overs are everywhere. Sad news.

I walked onto the old Reservoir Tennis Courts in Beverly Hills in the 1980s, heard that voice, and called out, "I hear Mason Adams!"

Adams called over from a neighboring court, "Hi! How are you?" and we had a nice conversation.

Good guy. I had no idea he was that old. On the other hand, I have no idea how old I am now.

He had a very distinctive voice. I remember all the radio mystery show work he did before I saw him on TV!

I'm sorry to hear this. However, when I first read the headline, I thought of Mason Reece. No way, he's 86.

Oh, rats! )c8

Very distinctive voice. Loved him on Lou Grant -- hate Ed Asner's morals and politics, but loved that show.

The original Smuckers voice was Burgess Meredith if I recall correctly. I believe Mason Adams got the gig due to the similarity in their voices.

In fact, Mr. Adams may ahve had the gig longer than Burgess Meredith.

He should've canned Lou Grant when he had the chance. His lack of sense and moral courage have been costing us ever since.

Did a nice little bit on West Wing early on too, as a retiring liberal judge..."The Republicans have guts...in a few years, one of them is going to defeat you."

What a voice he had. For those of you who are pushing 70 or better I believe that Mason was the radio voice of a 15 minute radio program called "Jack Armstrong The All American Boy" that was sponsored by the cereal Wheaties when I was growing up.

"Home Pride Butter-Top Bread. Tastes buttery, even before you butter it!"

I always remembered that distinct voice from the early 70's for that commercial as well as the Smuckers one.

Very distinctive voice - just like another actor, James Mason. (How's that for spreading confusion?)
