Girl Banned From Prom For Smoking Away From School

GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- Leona Fitzpatrick is going to court -- in order to go to the senior prom.

She's been barred from her prom for smoking -- and not even on school grounds. The Hillsboro, N.D., School Board has rules against students using alcohol, tobacco or drugs.

Students can be kicked out of extracurricular activities for violating the no-smoking rule. Now, Leona is seeking a court order so she can go to the dance. Her parents point out that she's 18 and legally allowed to smoke in North Dakota.

I hope she wins too! It is totally crazy... if a parent doesn't have control over their 18yr old, I'll be darned if the school does. GRRRRRR

This is really bad....but I heard about a house in the neighborhood that kids condomed..that's right. They actually hung condoms all over the trees and bushes. :)

I'm all for school dress codes too - school uniforms even better. But only on school grounds during school hours.

I'd say the apples have a few worms in them I guess I'm looking at this whole scenario as to, what is best for this young girl. I'm sure she didn't start smoking at the age of 18...probably more like 15-16. If there is even a chance that, she will have given up smoking because of all this, then the school did a wonderful thing.

Good for the school. She knew the rules going into this. Is she can't follow rules, then she should be banned.

I did not know that in America schools can own adult people.

We have drug testing at here at work, because of the heavy machinery we use and to keep people as safe as possible. If someone comes up positive on a drug test (which they do on their own time in their own home), do we not have a right to terminate that employee?

Tobacco is still legal, and it improves the concentration.

"So your stand on openly homosexual teachers is....?" I don't think a teacher being openly gay is wrong, as long as they don't discuss it in class with the students; i.e.: it's ok for them to say "I'm gay!!", but not ok to discuss their personal stuff with them. It also depends on what subject he/she teaches, for example, it's ok to have a gay math teacher, but a gay sex ed. teacher is a whole different thing.

Unless he or she breaks a rule during a school sponsored activity, OR in school...there is no reason for the school to act as if it's a custodial parent. If that's the case, I'll send them the bills for asthma and future lung infections.
