Guitar World magazine has responded with their Top 100 Guitarists Poll of their own. In response to the outrage of many due to the Rolling Stone magazine issue which left off many names Guitar World conducted a poll of readers and internet browsers to vote for the Top 100 Guitarists of All Time. I saw Roy at a small theater a few years ago. I was close enough from the stage to shine his shoes. The man put on one of the best shows I have seen.
Don't let the "Aw, shucks, I used to be on HeeHaw," schtick fool you. The man can PLAY. He can sit down and play with anybody, anywhere. The fact that he had the nads to trade licks with Joe Pass on an album is all you need to know.

Absolutely!! (and I trust you mean Alan Holdsworth). I also left off Mike Stern, Nick Webb, Earl Klugh, John Pizzarelli, Larry Coryell, T-Bone Walker, Mike Bloomfield .... Heck, this list could go on for some time.
Funny how not a single one of the "guitarists" on the list that started this thread even occurred to me as top 100 material. Black Sabbath? For crying out loud, every tune was a two-chord progression layered over a monotonous 4/4 beat. I've heard idling diesels more melodious than that bunch. How would you even know there was warm-blooded guitarist actually playing in the midst of that mush?
Viv joined the Leps in the spring of 1992. His first official live performance with the band was at that enormous Freddie Mercury benefit concert after Mercury died. He joined when Steve Clarke died.
Speaking of that concert, I'm listening to that now on DVD. That was one oustanding show. Also, Queen's Wembley 86 full concert is out on DVD as well. People who play and who love music need to check that out to see how a true showman performs.
Agreed. I couldn't believe he wasn't on the list at all. IMHO he should be in the top 5.
I'm wondering if the voters voted on speed alone. To me, that's a bogus measure of what a great guitarist is. Sure, speed is important but phrasing and what you "say" with the music is just as important. Otherwise it's like judging who is the most powerful orator solely based on how fast they can talk! Do we really think auctioneers are insipiring and creative speakers? ::grin::
Stevie was not only fast, he had great phrasing and at times it seemed the music was coming *through* him from somewhere else rather than from him. To me, that's the sign of a great guitar player.
