I recommend John Ray Skates' The Invasion of Japan-Alternative to the Bomb for further reading on plans for Olympic and Coronet. Richard Frank's Downfall-The End of the Japanese Empire is another excellent reference.

The fact is the A-bombs killed far less people than would have died if the invasion had happened, or even if the plans for blockade and conventional bombardment had continued.

My wife's aunt and cousin died at Nagasaki, but even she believes this now.

Thanks Gator Navy. Good to see you.

It's true it would have been worse for both us and the Japanese had the bombs not been used.

"The Invasion of Japan-Alternative to the Bomb"

I read that one, also a good novel called "The Burning Mountain". Trying to get my hands on a book called" Death is Lighter than a Feather" another novel based on the innvasion of Japan.
