The Second Armored Cavalry Regiment was functioning as VII Corps reconnaisance. They were to develop the situation in order to return intelligence to General Franks. In a Corps level armored attack only very severe blows against the enemy will allow discovery of exact position, defense readiness, personell quality, etc. Franks was just allowing his reconnaisance elements to live to fight again, when their special talents would be very usefull. So the heavy forces were passed through the Cavalry to continue the attack. Fewer American dead that way, more very tough Republican Guards dead that way. A good job.

Really enjoyed this one, Sam. Enough detail in the description to follow what went on. I find I haven't given the '91 war the study it deserves. I will remedy that.

Kind of a late post, but just thought I'd bring up that troop of the 2/2 that did so much damage to the Iraqis.
E Trp (Eagle) 2/2 ACR, commanded by Cpt McMaster at the time.
I worked with Lt. Mc Master when I was stationed with the 2/2 in Germany. I also had several friends in Eagle Troop.
The Iraqis drew a bad card when they crossed E Troop, and the rest is history.
Thanks for another great article!
Scouts out!
