My mom is helping me post.

The Aleutians, being unsuitable for agriculture, lacking in mineral resources, and with little possibility of commercial exploitation, received only slight attention after their acquisition from Russia in 1867.

The Aleutians were slaves for the Russians. Many of them were killed and there are not very many of them left any more. Only a few 100 now. They went south and hunted sea otter for the Russians.
