My dad was there. My mom has always resented the fact that no one appreciates the sacrifices the men in the Aleutians made. I don't think it ever bothered my dad, though. He was always very proud of his service. He didn't talk much about the fighting, preferring to reminisce about beauty of Alaska, his sled dogs, his loan sharking, his Canadian friends, the funny Russians, and the airplanes. We lost Dad just before Christmas, so he can’t receive your salute--but it sure means a lot to me.
