Our safety bulletins in the 1970’s listed a few events like this, usually maintenance related. Some guy was crawling around the cockpit, snagged a handle and that’s all she wrote.

Yep, the F-5 has been out of production for quite awhile. It is also is a mighty sweet aircraft, a wicked dog fighter and inexpensive to operate. The T-38 is the 2-seat trainer version and has been retired from that USAF role in the last few years.
The USAF and I think USN aggressor training squadrons have also retired their F-5s in the last few years as well. Spend any time around an AFB and you are likely to see a F-5 or T-38 buzzing around for hours doing touch and go landings. Desk bound pilots use them lots to keep their flight hours up to keep their flight status active.
The last version of the F-5 was larger than it's predecessors and finally got engines powerful enough to not be a handicap. This F-5 went head to head with the F-16 with the F-16 being selected. Most of the info I have read leads me to believe the USAF selected the wrong plane.

All I can think of is one of the pilots asking “Achmed, what is this red pull ring for”? Pilot defect much more likely than technical defect.
LOL. This one reminds me of the jihadi suicide by mortar misfire video from a few years back.

Incidents like this are not unheard of around the flight community in all countries. I remember a USAF training flick which about safety and paying attention.
A B-52 going down a runway. The Co-Pilot had been in a funk before manning the plane. The Pilot said "Cheer Up!" The Co-Pilot responded, "Roger, Gear Up," and pulled the lever. The BUFF skidded to a stop on the runway.

Like that episode from The Beverly Hillbillies, when Jethro was a double knot spy and equipped his truck with an escape hatch.
