This memorial has been REDONE, to express the moment of that day and the memory of sacrifices made aboard the Naval carrier USS Forrestal - CVA-59 on July 29, 1967 in North Vietnam -- Gulf of Tonkin, South China Sea, at or about 10:50 AM. Once the fires were extinguished, the extent of the devastation was apparent. Most tragic was the loss to the crew, 134 had lost their lives, while an additional 64 were injured. This disaster remains the single worst loss of life on a Naval vessel since the USS Franklin (CV-13) was bombed in WWII while operating in the Pacific. The ship proceeded to Cubic Point in the Philippines for temporary repairs. In only eight days enough repairs were made that she could start the long trip back to Norfolk, Virginia (Home Port) and then to Portsmouth Virginia shipyard for permanent repairs. The pictures are contributed by, Bill Mason, PH2-US Navy.

SONOBUOY PING!

Click on pic for past Navair pings.
Post or FReepmail me if you wish to be enlisted in or discharged from the Navair Pinglist.
The only requirement for inclusion in the Navair Pinglist is an interest in Naval Aviation.
This is a medium to low volume pinglist.

Heroism in war is not, by itself a reason to be vote POTUS. But the fact that this man John McCain followed 22 years of naval service and POW imprisonment with 26 years of service to his adopted state of Arizona and to his country and is about to lose an election to the shallowest and most unqualified candidate in history is a situation I cannot even begin to comprehend.

agreed, I always thought a great campaign ad for McCain would be to show JFK and the PT 109, HW Bush being pulled onto the sub after being shot down, and McCain In Vietnam and the Forrestal and mentioning something like you just said about character and how some people are just destined to lead

Not being a pilot my service on four aircraft carriers would not even be a drop of sweat on John McCain's fore head. The feat of landing on a aircraft carrier takes more courage then anyone can imagine.

Yes it was John McCain and he is older than myself. I was just 20 years old and turned 21 in the Philippians, Olongapo City. The sacrifices made there are truly from the spirit of American, to die for our country is nothing because we know that God is real and there is an Eternity. Thanks a million for commenting my friend.

Yes and Amen I was told in the USN that landing on an Aircraft Carrier with an aircraft, is like landing on a postage stamp on an envelope.

Since there will be ‘media coverage’ of this seminal event, I have to wonder why Senator McCain wouldn’t be an integral part of it....is he gonna be there this weekend?
