1969 Apollo 12 launched for 2nd manned Moon landing

Official insignia of Apollo 12, the second scheduled lunar landing mission. The clipper ship signifies that the crew is all Navy and symbolically relates the era of the clipper ship to the era of spaceflight. The portion of the moon shown is representative of the Ocean of Storms area in which Apollo 12 will land.

The huge, 363-foot tall Apollo 12 (Spacecraft 108/Lunar Module 6/Saturn 507) space vehicles is launched from Pad A, Launch Complex 39, Kennedy Space Center, at 11:22 a.m., November 14, 1969 (58883); View of the launch from across the water. Note the flocks of birds flying across the water as the Apollo spacecraft lifts off (58884).

The photograph captured a view of a lightning bolt during the launch of the Apollo 12 lunar landing mission from Pad A, Launch Complex 39, Kennedy Space Center. The silhouetted structure is the mobile launch tower. This electrical discharge between clouds and the ground took place at about 36.5 seconds after liftoff when the Apollo 12 space vehicle was about 6,000 feet atltutde.

I am sure you have noticed my disappointment with NASA. I suppose I am too sentimental about Apollo.

To me the Saturn V and the Apollo ships generally were, as far as I can tell, really quite good designs. Problems can be found with the Command and Lander modules pretty easily, and I do figure I could have done better (no Egotism in THIS boy, no sirree Bob!!!!!!!!!) but really the machine was a real work of art in every way.

Myself, I think we should go to first principles. For example, Robert Truax's Sea Dragon:

Notice the dimensions - 60 feet in diameter and the nozzle mouth 66 feet across. Sweet.

The whole site is very cool, just make sure you switch to English!
