Religious History
1662 Birth of Matthew Henry, English Presbyterian pastor. He is remembered for his "Exposition of the Old and New Testaments" (1708-10) -- still in print! -- whose value lies in its devotional and practical comments on the books of the Bible.
1685 Louis XIV revoked the 1598 Edict of Nantes, which had permitted French Protestants limited religious tolerance. The Huguenot exodus which followed drained France's industrial economy, and possibly hastened the French Revolution.
1931 English apologist C.S. Lewis wrote in a letter: 'The [Christian] "doctrines" are translations into our concepts and ideas of that which God has already expressed in language more adequate, namely the actual incarnation, crucifixion, and resurrection.'
1949 Country songwriter Stuart Hamblen, 31, underwent a spiritual conversion. Author of the popular 1954 hit "This Old House," Hamblen later wrote such Christian favorites as "It Is No Secret What God Can Do," "How Big is God?" and "They That Wait Upon the Lord."
1954 "The Week in Religion" aired for the last time over Dumont television. First broadcast in March 1952, this ecumenical Sunday evening panel show divided the hour into 20-minute segments each for Protestant, Catholic and Jewish news.

Bachelor princes advertise for wives
October 18, 2005
SERBIA'S royal family has issued a statement in the style of a personal ad seeking local wives for its three unmarried princes.
"Princess Wanted!" and "How to become a princess in Serbia?" read the headlines to the emailed statement, in which prince Peter, 25, and his twin brothers Philip and Alexander, 23, said they were ready to meet the loves of their lives.
"They are young, beautiful and perfectly educated. They have charm, a sense of humour. They always have (a) smile on their faces," said the Serbian royal family.
"They are descendants of one of the oldest royal families in Europe, but their titles dont prevent them from skiing, surfing, dancing and cooking fabulous meals.
"Their royal highnesses Peter, Philip and Alexander have something else in common: those they will choose to marry will become princess."
The statement, which also appeared in a local magazine, featured posed photographs of the three princes, who the Serbian royal family's website says are descendants of Britain's Queen Victoria.
Peter, Philip and Alexander are the sons of Serbia's crown prince Alexander Karadjordjevic, 60, who returned to Serbia in late 2000 and serves a largely ceremonial role in the Balkan state.
Alexander II had lived in exile in London after being banned from his homeland by former socialist leader Josip Broz Tito. The crown prince is the son of Peter II, the young king crowned in 1941 who fled his country after Nazi Germany invaded.
His three sons were raised abroad and none of them speaks the language of their homeland perfectly.
"A real love hasn't happened to me yet and for the time being I cannot say that it exists," said Philip, who along with Alexander was born in Fairfax, Virginia.
The "fact" that Peter is on the list of most wanted bachelors not only in Serbia, but in Europe as well, "brings a smile to his face," said the royal family statement.
"Sometimes I think about marriage as a part of my future," said Peter, who was born in Chicago.
"Naturally I see myself in a new, different role one day. But there is still time before that. I hope true love exists. I try to keep my faith in some ideals. True love is one of them," said the heir to Serbia's titular crown.
"I will find one if she finds me. It is nice to meet someone who then becomes a real friend, because the basis of any love is friendship and trust," Peter added.
