Because we often read Luke's gospel at Christmas, we may forget that 9 months of trust and waiting separated Mary's response to Gabriel from the birth of Jesus. When we read her words of surrender in light of this timespan, they take on added meaning: "Behold the maidservant of the Lord! Let it be to me according to your word" (Luke 1:38). Mary must have received great encouragement when her cousin Elizabeth told her, "Blessed is she who believed, for there will be a fulfillment of those things which were told her from the Lord" (v.45). We can celebrate beginnings by giving a hug or handshake to a new believer who professes faith in Christ. We can write a note of encouragement to a friend who has chosen to obey God's Word. Let's grasp every opportunity to celebrate the beginnings of God's work in the lives of others. -David McCasland
And minimal energy spent To pass an encouraging word To one who'll be glad it was sent. -Hess The human spirit soars with hope when lifted by an encouraging word.

Yikes, frozen Russian soldiers.
Nothing worse than commiecicles.
Morning Snippy. Ready to talk to the reporter today?
10/03/04 - A lone airman salutes the U.S. flag as the final scene at this year's Air Force tattoo ceremony at Bolling Air Force Base, Washington, D.C., on Oct. 3, 2004. The word Tattoo is derived from the Dutch word "Tap-toe" which means quite literally "turn off the taps." The signal which indicated that soldiers should return to their quarters and that the beer in the taverns should be turned off was transmitted by drum beat each evening. Eventually this developed into a ceremonial performance of military music by massed bands. (U.S. Air Force photo by Staff Sgt. Amber K. Whittington) (Released)
one of the quotes from an official report by a General of the Red Army (i can't remember his name- Russian names are really HARD for me for some reason or other, which is why WAR & PEACE is NOT one of my favorite novels) was:
"i found to my complete horror & surprise, that i was fighting the SAME five thousand Finns at every terrain feature & was accomplishing NOTHING, except killing a LEGION of my own comrades." (emphasis: mine)

Truly a very unpublicized and costly war. What a tough pill for the Finns to swallow in giving up 22,000 miles of land.
probably one of the greatest defensive tacticians since Robert E. Lee.
Brilliant analogy. Without adequate supplies the Finns still ran a brilliant campaign. It's interesting given the history of border disputes and conquest that Finland would allow 20 years of military neglect. Military minds like Mannerheim are often checkmated by politics. IMHO.
