Fox News Channel - War Stories with Oliver North ^

Sunday, February 27 at 8 p.m. ET!
In this thrilling episode youll go to war aboard the destroyers of World War II. Their crews nicknamed these ships tin cans because they lacked armor. The hundreds of destroyers and the 300,000 brave souls that sailed aboard proved invaluable in both the Atlantic and Pacific theatres.
"War Stories" host Oliver North talks to several sailors who survived a punishing typhoon in December of 1944. Evan Fenn tells how he barely escaped the USS Monaghan as it was overwhelmed and capsized by seas towering near 80 feet. Youll meet another sailor whose tin can went head to head with a massive Japanese battleship. And youll learn, from a survivor, what its like to have suicidal kamikazes smash into your ship, just feet from your battle station.

As noted on Townhall.com, this is a better alternative than watching the Oscars. We hope someone in Freeper Foxhole will pass along this message to their Navy veterans who served aboard these mighty brave ships. We thank you for your service as the front line in the Pacific, often the first to engage the enemy and the last to be recognized for your valor.

I wonder if he will include one of their favorite practical jokes.
The head was a trough with seat over it. Light a wad of toilet paper and drop it in on the up roll and watch as down side people jump.
A tale oft told by the old salts who remembered the old four stackers of WWII.

I think Ollie and Fox do a magnificent job on War Stories. I rarely miss it. Most touching and inspiring are the veteran's voices themselves. And the look on Ollie's face.
Thank you Fox and thank you veterans!!!

We're having a War Stories viewing party and will talk with Evan Fenn after the show. You can listen in as two "Old Salts" talk for the first time since 21 December 1944.
Evan Fenn, the last living survivor of the USS Monaghan clung to the life raft with thirteen other crew members. Of those, only six would survive the days ahead until saved by the USS Brown. Chuck Smith aboard the rescue ship relives the experience of weathering Typhoon Cobra that made it possible to save the lives of 13 survivors of the Hull (DD-350) and six survivors of the Monaghan (DD-354). PDN's Webmaster, whose father did not survive long enough to be rescued, facilitated the reunion.

I spent 3yrs on a destroyer in the Navy from
'66-'69 as a Gunners Mate, GMG3.
USS CORRY DD 817 '68-'69 Gulf of Tonkin Yacht Club Member.
http://www.uss-corry.com/ Home port was Norfolk Virginia
and sailed with her in the North Atlantic,
Caribbean,(dealt with Cuban gunboats off of Havana in Jan '68)
thru the Panama Canal, across the Pacific to Viet Nam and back.
We were in a typhoon off of Japan
in 1969
We took waves 80' +
and a 46 1/2 degree roll
We were en route back to the States,
after our tour in Viet Nam
If you ever see
The Caine Mutiny
with Humprhey Bogart
the scene on the bridge, where the Captain loses it,
is a good depiction of what we encountered.
Our DD was post WW II, 1946, and only 300 feet long
50 feet at the width
I'll be watching Ollie!

Thanks for the headsup!! How anyone can stomach the Oscars is beyond me. Thanks to all the tin can sailors for their service to this great nation.

Our DD was pre-WWII, decorated, hit by a kamikazi.
Never saw 80 footers but plenty of 40-50 footers. I was standing lee helm when a greenie broke through the glass on the bridge and soaked the captain from head to foot. He calmly looked down at his soaking clothes and his eyes went immediately to his cigarette which was a goner. He calmly lit another and didn't say a word.
