Complicated as they seem, the new firing regulations were much simpler than those used by foreign armies and they speeded up firing considerably. The bulk of the fighting in the Revolutionary War was a stand up and slug match. The winning side was the one that could get in a good first volley, take a return fire and re-load faster than its foes. Once the individual could handle himself and his musket he was placed in groups of three, then in groups of twelve, and taught to wheel, to dress to the right and to the left. Alignment and dressing the ranks was emphasized but only because proper alignment was necessary for smooth firing.
The results of the army training were in evidence by May 20, 1778 at Barren Hill and then at Monmouth (ending June 28th). Washington recommended an appointment for Steuben as Inspector General on April 30th, and on May 5th, Congress approved it. It was Steuben serving in Washington's headquarters in the summer of 1778 who was the first to report the enemy was heading for Monmouth. During the winter of 1778-1779, Steuben prepared "Regulations for the Order and Discipline of the Troops of the United States," also known as the "Blue Book." It's basis was the plan he devised at Valley Forge.

Baron von Steuben observed that no European army could have survived under such circumstances found at Valley Forge. While deploring the colonial soldiers' lack of discipline and training, he was deeply moved by the way they made light of their miseries and by the depth of their devotion to the cause of freedom. He had never seen an army with such a spirit. Baron von Steuben recognized very quickly that the Americans did not defer to anyone simply because he had a noble title and wore epaulettes. He knew that the Americans were there because they wanted to be in the Continental Army, not out of fear of punishment. This meant treating them with respect, making them understand the reasons for orders, and leading by example while sharing their hardships. In a letter to a Prussian officer, Steuben explained the Continental Army: "The genius of the nation is not in the least to be compared with that of the Prussians, Austrians, or French. You say to your soldiers, 'Do this' and he doeth it; but I am obliged to say 'This is the reason why you ought to do that,' and then he does it." The soldiers respected him because, as Joseph Martin, a private in the Connecticut line, wrote, "He had more sense than our officers who cared but little about us." The results of the training that winter and spring were evident as the Americans fought the British to a standstill on the Monmouth battlefield. |

The whole building, being fitted together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. Ephesians 2:21
Bible In One Year: Psalms 23-25; Acts 21:18-40
An elderly man who visited an art gallery was deeply moved by a painting that portrayed Christ on the cross. It was so realistic in depicting the suffering of the Savior that his heart was filled with gratitude for the great price the Lord Jesus paid for his redemption. With tears trickling down his cheeks, he exclaimed,Bless Him! I love Him! I love Him!"
Other visitors standing nearby wondered what the man was talking about. One person walked over and looked at the painting. Soon he too felt deep emotion welling up in his heart. Turning to the old man, he gave him a firm handshake and said,So do I! I love Him too!The scene was repeated as a third man and then a fourth walked over, gazed at the painting, and exclaimed,I love Him too!Although these men were from different churches, they felt a common bond because of their faith in Christ.
As believers, we need an awareness of our spiritual unity with other Christians. We need to focus on the fundamentals on which we agreesuch as our love for the Savior who died for usrather than bicker about lesser issues.
Regardless of sincere disagreements, we as blood-bought believers should recognize that we have a strong family tie in Christ. Richard De Haan

Interesting.
The Star-Spangled Banner Project, formally launched in 1998, is applying the latest scientific research and techniques to preserve the woolen and cotton fabrics of the flag. The project aims to assess the flags current condition, understand the causes of its deterioration, and design and carry out treatment to help prevent further damage.
After the conservation work is complete, the Star-Spangled Banner will be returned to the heart of the Museum and installed in a dramatic new flag room. Visitors will be able to see the flag in its true condition, as a tattered but treasured piece of our nations history.
