Although I liked Gettysburg better, Gods and Generals is an excellent film. I wish they could have covered more, they had to skip some of the major actions covered in the time the movie takes place.

There is a real lack of good "War between the States" movies

Morning w_over_w.

"To secede from the Union and set up another government would cause war. If you go to war with the United States, you will never conquer her, as she has the money and the men. If she does not whip you by guns, powder, and steel, she will starve you to death. It will take the flower of the country-the young men."

Sam Houston

Sadly, Houston turned out to be correct.

I hope the PC crowd today never succeeds in destroying the heritage of the South. They'll never realize it is also part of the heritage of the United States

The PC crowd is the "ignorance crowd". Ignorance plus fear is a formidable form of darkness . . . may the light of truth always expose its flank.

"Texas has yet to learn submission to any oppression, come from what source it may."

A soldier's account of Shiloh - makes you feel like you're there. Nicely done.

"we reveled in the fatness of the enemy's camp"Goes along with what Sam Houston said. The North's ability to supply armies was almost limitless.

I also hope the p.c. crowd doesn't stamp out the heritage of the South - although they sure are trying. I feel much the same way as this young soldier - admiration for the courage and sacrifice of both sides.

I was disappointed in Gods and Generals, Sam. The film ignored Antietam, probably the decisive battle of the war. It was also imbalanced, covering little of the Northern side except for Chamberlain. The pace was slow and it seemed poorly edited.

I did laugh when I saw Ted Turner and Bobby Byrd pretending to be Confederate Generals. But then, they might have been just as good as Joe Johnston, or Beauregard or Bragg!

Hilter was such a doofus general. The whole thrust southeast was nuts - he should have taken Moscow first. Then to throw away an entire army the Germans would badly need later just for stubborn pride. IMHO Hitler personally shortened the war by years.

BTW, I was amused several times during the Iraq campaign when commentators would claim the Americans would suffer in the seige of Baghdad as the Germans had at Stalingrad. Those armchair generals didn't even know the Germans were the beseiged, not the beseigers.

Morning CT. The first of the "modern wars", the beginning of out producing your enemies.

I agree with the part about skipping some major battles, but the focus of the movie was on Jackson so I don't fault the lack of the Northern view. IMHO they just tried to cover too long a period in one movie.

Antietam, there's a movie waiting to be made.

If Hitler stuck to politics and let his generals run the war things may have turned out a lot different in Europe.

I love these "first hand" accounts of war. It really gives you an inside view of what it was like.

We watched "Gods and Generals" last weekend, and decided it was a movie that my son needs to watch.

He just did a "portfolio" project on the civil war for social studies class.

In case anyone missed it, that movie is actually "part 1" of a three movie set, and a prequel to Gettysburg.

According to the credits, the final movie will be called "The Last Full Measure"

Thanks for the great threads.

IMHO they just tried to cover too long a period in one movie.

That's the root of the problem.

Antietam, there's a movie waiting to be made.

That would be a good one!

I'm sure glad he didn't!

Sometime in the last year or so I read that British intel considered whether an assasination mission against Hitler was feasible, but they also considered whether it would be advisable in light of all bad decisions Hitler was making that helped the Allies. Ultimately, they didn't try.

You're welcome Johnny.

As a Senior High School assignemnet my son did a comparison of Antietam and Gettysburg, arguing that Antietam was really the "turning point" of the war.
