Veterans Day is right around the corner.
It's an opportunity for us to support our troops, our country and show appreciations for our local veterans. It's another way to counter the Anti-Iraq campaign propaganda. Would you like to help? Are there any VetsCoR folks on the Left Coast? We have a school project that everyone can help with too, no matter where you live. See the end of this post for details.
Three Northern California events have been scheduled and we need help with each:
Friday evening - November 7th Veterans in School (An Evening of Living History, A Veterans Day Ice Cream Social)
Saturday - 11 a.m. November 8th: Veterans Day Parade (PDN & Friends parade entry)
Sunday November 9, 2003 Noon to 3:00 PM Support our Troops & Veterans Rally prior to Youth Symphony Concert
Each of the WebPages above have a link to e-mail a confirmation of your interest and desire to volunteer. These are family events and everyone is welcome to pitch in. We'd really appreciate hearing from you directly via each these specific links. This way, we can keep you posted on only those projects you want to participate in.
Veterans in School - How you can help if you're not close enough to participate directly. If you are a veteran, share a story of your own with the children. If you have family serving in the military, tell them why it's important that we all support them. Everyone can thank them for having this special event. Keep in mind that there are elementary school kids.
Help us by passing this message around to other Veteran's groups. I have introduced VetsCoR and FreeperFoxhole to a number of school teachers. These living history lessons go a long way to inspire patriotism in our youth. Lets see if we can rally America and give these youngsters enough to read for may weeks and months ahead. If we can, we'll help spread it to other schools as well.

Keep me posted, please. We are trying to get a memorial to Juan Ramon Trevino, the only death during Vietnam from Calwa, California. He was a Marine and the oldest son of a poor Mexican family. They never did get over it. It would give the family a great deal of pride if this memorial were completed. Some folks are working on it. God bless America! Thanks for doing this, Comwatch, and keep up the good work!

You all can still write letters, right comwatch. I'm in the midwest but have written a letter to the students letting them know I appreciate the fact they are honoring our veterans by taking part in this project. C'mon y'all what are these kids going to think when they don't hear from very many folks? Will they think no one cares?
Please take the time no matter where you are to write a short note to these kids, either about your service or if you have none to share then about a family member or just a thank you and maybe an sharing why you appreciate our veterans on this veterans day and every day.

Here is a copy of the letter I sent to the students:
My name is Kerry Myers and I spent two years in Viet Nam fighting the spread of Communism. The debate continues to this day regarding the methods and tactics employed in that war. What I want you to know is that the 58,000 men and women who died there did not die in vain. When the Communist North Vietnamese stormed into Saigon in 1975, all they won was an empty shoebox. Today, in both the south and the north, golf courses, hotels and high rise office buildings are under construction. These are in no rational way considered to be symbols of Communist success. These are the indicators of a growing entrepreneurial class of successful capitalist businessmen and women. Who won? We did!
I would also like to speak for my father's generation, who fought the Germans and Japanese in World War II. My dad was a bombardier in a B-24 operating out of Italy. My mother was in the Navy, working as an ammunition inspector. Because of the sacrifices of that generation, you and I are not speaking German or Japanese today. I would like to close my remarks by asking you to watch the film Saving Private Ryan. You may have seen it already, but I want you to pay attention to the closing scene in the film, for it contains a powerful message to all of us. In that scene, Private Ryan is speaking to the Captain who, with his men have rescued him. He says to the Captain "How do I pay you back?" The Captain says "Go home and earn it." I say to you, we have a sacred obligation to all who have gone before us to earn it.
Respectfully yours,
Kerry Myers
Proud to be an American

Thanks KiloWhskey. That's a great letter. I like the reference to "Earn it"

Wonderful Kerry, thank you so much, we really appreciate it and it's good for the kids to hear from as many folks as possible as they take the time to study about Veteran's Day.

Dave wrote back, saying that he had received only four letters thus far. I am certain that freeper vets can do a better job than that.

I know, it is sad. SAM even put this thread out on the general interest area.
Here is a link to it. We hoped at least out there it would get more attention than only on the VetsCoR forum which isn't as visible to the general public.
Here is a link in case you'd like to repost your letter there. Perhaps I should post mine too. I really am surprise and saddened at the lack of response.
There is a big push on this year to have students across the country study Veterans Day in an effort to remember their sacrifices and service which makes it even more sad that the response to this one school comwatch is trying to help has only 4 Freeper responses. Thank you so much for taking the time to write your letter.
And you don't have to be a veteran to write.

In an effort to show everyone you do not have to be a Veteran or live in California to write a letter to the elementary children at the school comwatch asking our support for, and to encourage others to write, here is my letter;
***
Hello,
I wanted to thank you all for honoring our service members. This includes our veterans as well as those men and women serving in the military today.
I am not a veteran but my mother served in the Navy in WWII and my father served in the Army in WWII. My sister and brother served stateside in the early 70's in the Air Force.
I wanted to write to support your efforts this Veteran's day.
It is very important that we never forget the sacrifices our veterans made to keep America free. These men and women, now and in the past gave up jobs, homes, family and often times their life just so you can continue to live in a free country and have opportunities available to you that are just a dream in other countries.
It's a very noble thing to decide to put your life on the line or as we say, in harm's way, just so others can live in freedom.
There are bad people in this world who want to take away what we enjoy and want us to live like they live and do what they say. Americans for over 200 years have been fighting to deny our enemies that kind of power of us.
I hope you learn a lot through this exercise and gain a respect for our men and women in uniform and the many veterans we are blessed to still have with us. Whenever you see the flag of the United States, remember that your countrymen died on the battlefield for that flag and what it stands for. Freedom and Liberty.
Thank you for taking the time to honor our men and women in uniform.
(Signed)
Columbus, Ohio
