Another thing...show me the historically Roman Catholic countries of Europe, and I'll show you some of the most secular atheistic populations on earth. America on the other hand, with its dominance of Protestants, is about the most religious countries on earth. The idea that Protestantism brought in antinomianism is just silly, and without evidence.
New England Yankee intellectual pride and greed maybe--as the author here argues, but not Protestant thinking.
The Scandinavian countries and Britain, predominantly Protestant for four centuries, are presently every bit as secular as the Latin Catholic nations of Europe. It would seem the only nations in Europe that have any degree of religious fervor are Ireland and Poland, both countries where the Catholic faith became closely entwined with national identity while those nations were under foreign rule.
The United States is the only nation of European heritage where evangelical Protestantism is an important element in the national culture, with the possible exception of one or two Central American nations. Indeed, the heart of resistance to secularism, hedonism, and socialism in America is among the Baptists, Pentecostals, and other evangelicals, especially in the South, Lower Midwest, and Southwest. Many, though far from all, of their great and great-great-grandfathers, wore grey during the Civil War.
