They put their lives on the line each and every day they put on their uniforms. They are the thin blue line that stands between the criminal element and law-abiding citizens that just want to live their lives in peace.

You might think that and they might want you to think that, but it isn't true. As jobs go police work isn't even in the top ten most dangerous jobs in the USA. The supremes ruled that the police have no obligation to protect anyone, but only "society as a whole" whatever that means. SO YOU, not the police, are really responsible for your own safety and protecting yourself from criminal elements. True they collect criminals, BUT THEY DO IT AFTER THE FACT.

“I just don’t understand why some citizens’ lives are considered more valuable than others”

Neither do I, nor would the founders.

It’s not about value. It’s about risk. That if the perp was willing to kill a member of LE, the perp was a greater risk to the public at large.

This is correct. And a police officer that lived only about a mile from me was arrested not long ago for having child porn on his computer and cell phone, and is suspected of having raped a retarded woman. If something happened to him, I doubt if I’d mourn too much. Police are needed, but they are just people like the rest of us, there are good and bad. Of course the ones who were ambushed and killed were most likely some of the good ones..

“Why are police lives and government employee lives more valuable than the lives of everyone else?”

They aren’t. And no law based on such a premise would withstand legal scrutiny. Equal protection.

However, there are mitigating factors for increasing the severity of the penalty of certain crimes. For example, robbery is a serious crime. Using a weapon, such as a gun, makes it aggravated robbery.

Targeting law enforcement officers for murder while in the commission of their duties escalates the severity of the crime. Compare this act to a bar room brawl where a fight leads to a death. Or compare it to someone who kills someone due to reckless driving caused by checking a cell phone text message. In the latter two cases a death is caused by someone, and these would probably bring felony charges if provable in court.

That being said, even while some murders may be more “serious” offenses than others, you can only implement the death penalty once. So a multiple homicide by a terrorist and a single murder by the jealous husband of an estranged spouse (which might have been “justifiable homicide” at one time in this nation) can still only be punished with no more than capital punishment. Beyond that is up to God.

Mr. Remeta, who is 33 years old, has been convicted of killing six people in a succession of robberies and shootings that stretched from Michigan to Texas to Florida in 1985. He is awaiting execution for the murder of one of them -- Chet Reeder, a 60-year-old convenience store clerk in Ocala, Fla., whose cash register yielded $52.

Scott Michael Greene, 46, of Urbandale, Iowa, is being sought in connection with Wednesday morning’s shooting deaths of two police officers in central Iowa, the Des Moines and Urbandale police departments say.

You go after law enforcement agents, whose motto is to protect and to serve; it is an attack on all of us. Even Trump has said this.

I don’t call shooting LEOs to be the same as shooting the county clerk or dog catcher, they are government employees to,

shooting law enforcement, even firemen to me, is shooting who upholds the law or tries to protect us “some” if people are saying we ourselves are the first line of defense, I do agree.

Your post contradicts itself. You say its not about value its about risk. Then you go on and justify it by saying the perp was a risk to the public at large......

Allow the common citizen to defend himself, with anything at his disposal, and the need for police would reduce.

Also, it is a myth that police are there to protect you. Legally they are not charged with your protection.

I said greater risk, and I meant what I said. A perp who kills a cop poses an even greater threat to the public at large. And I have no problem with the perp being treated accordingly.

“Also, it is a myth that police are there to protect you. Legally they are not charged with your protection.”

Leave the anti-cop crap away from the screen for awhile.

This animal had a history with the Urbandale PD. He murdered the two officers in cold blood.
The killer is beyond despicable; I wish we had the death penalty here in Iowa.

First off, I do not care about the perp, we were talking about whether a police officers life was worth more than a citizens life. (automatic death penalty for killing an officer, as opposed to killing a citizen).

You said (I thought) that the officer incurs more risk, thus the penalty for killing him should be more than a citizen.

You then went on to say the perp was a risk to the community at large (I agree). All I did was point out that your argument that police incur more risk was contradictory to your statement that the perp was a risk to the community at large. (both police and citizens at risk, equally)

You are mistaken, in no way do I think the perp is anywhere near human, nor should he be treated as such. I merely agreed with another posters comment that the officers life is not worth more than any innocent American citizens life. THEY ARE EQUAL.
