The supremes ruled that the police have no obligation to protect anyone, but only "society as a whole" whatever that means. SO YOU, not the police, are really responsible for your own safety and protecting yourself from criminal elements. True they collect criminals, BUT THEY DO IT AFTER THE FACT.

This is correct. And a police officer that lived only about a mile from me was arrested not long ago for having child porn on his computer and cell phone, and is suspected of having raped a retarded woman. If something happened to him, I doubt if I’d mourn too much. Police are needed, but they are just people like the rest of us, there are good and bad. Of course the ones who were ambushed and killed were most likely some of the good ones..
