When Huckabee entered the race, it was obvious to me he was a big-government social conservative. But honestly, everything else matters to me less than a true social conservative. God doesn’t bless a society based on their economic policies - he blesses them on their social policies. The problem is economic conservatism before social conservatism is putting the cart before the horse. Social conservatism begets God’s blessings, one of which is economic prosperity, which in our time appears to be a free market system. Not the other way around.

I disagree but authors, historians and pundits have never agreed. Which comes first? Economic decay or moral decay? Ask yourself which situation would make me more suseptible to evil. Being poor or being rich? If I couldn’t feed my family then I would easily lie cheat and steal to change that. If I was rich, well I’d just have more toys and free time and give to more charities.

Exactly.

Conservatives without God - Nazi’s.

Liberals without God - Communists.

If there is no supreme moral force in the universe - if there is no real law and man is god - then anything is rational and nothing is rational and all behavior is equally valid - and the crowd always heads toward madness.

“God doesn’t bless a society based on their economic policies - he blesses them on their social policies.”

I have a nit to pick: societies are blessed for Gods glory, not their own behavior.

“The problem is economic conservatism before social conservatism is putting the cart before the horse.”

That’s a personal opinion (one I happen to share) for individuals. While Christians are far more likely going to be ok with ‘rendering to Caesar’ its hard to see a big bloated government leaving us alone to worship as we please.

The two are tied in a sense...

Many of the social problems are related to our country’s liberal economic policies.

And G-D doesn’t bless any country that gives too much power to government

"God doesn’t bless a society based on their economic policies - he blesses them on their social policies."

The proper role of government vs. civil society IS a MAJOR social issue! The role of government is a fundamental principle of conservatism that transcends the artificial economic/social issue distinction and has implications in both areas. If a person can not get this fundamental principle straight, then I do not consider him a conservative even if he takes conservative positions on some economic or social issues.

Hmm. I think liberty and having been created with certain inalienable rights are blessings of God. Putting the FORCE of government in place of a nation of humble servants can’t bestow the blessings of the creator in either the “social” or the “economic” sense.
