The Palins’ un-American activities
Salon ^ | Oct 8, 08 | David Talbot

“My government is my worst enemy. I’m going to fight them with any means at hand.”

This was former revolutionary terrorist Bill Ayers back in his old Weather Underground days, right? Imagine what Sarah Palin is going to do with this incendiary quote as she tears into Barack Obama this week.

Only one problem. The quote is from Joe Vogler, the raging anti-American who founded the Alaska Independence Party. Inconveniently for Palin, that’s the very same secessionist party that her husband, Todd, belonged to for seven years and that she sent a shout-out to as Alaska governor earlier this year. (“Keep up the good work,” Palin told AIP members. “And God bless you.”)

.AIP chairwoman Lynette Clark told me recently that Sarah Palin is her kind of gal. “She’s Alaskan to the bone … she sounds just like Joe Vogler.”

So who are these America-haters that the Palins are pallin’ around with?

Before his strange murder in 1993, party founder Vogler preached armed insurrection against the United States of America. Vogler, who always carried a Magnum with him, was fond of saying, “When the [federal] bureaucrats come after me, I suggest they wear red coats. They make better targets. In the federal government are the biggest liars in the United States, and I hate them with a passion. They think they own [Alaska]. There comes a time when people will choose to die with honor rather than live with dishonor. That time may be coming here. Our goal is ultimate independence by peaceful means under a minimal government fully responsive to the people. I hope we don’t have to take human life, but if they go on tramping on our property rights, look out, we’re ready to die.”

This quote is from “Coming Into the Country,” by John McPhee, who traipsed around Alaska’s remote gold mining country with Vogler for his 1991 book. The violent-tempered secessionist vowed to McPhee that if any federal official tried to stop him from polluting Alaska’s rivers with his earth-moving equipment, he would “run over him with a Cat and turn mosquitoes loose on him while he dies.”

Vogler wasn’t just a blowhard either. He put his secessionist ideas into action, working to build AIP membership to 20,000 — an impressive figure by Alaska standards — and to elect party member Walter Hickel as governor in 1990.

Vogler’s greatest moment of glory was to be his 1993 appearance before the United Nations to denounce United States “tyranny” before the entire world and to demand Alaska’s freedom. The Alaska secessionist had persuaded the government of Iran to sponsor his anti-American harangue.

That’s right … Iran. The Islamic dictatorship. The taker of American hostages. The rogue nation that McCain and Palin have excoriated Obama for suggesting we diplomatically engage. That Iran.

AIP leaders allege that Vogler, who was murdered that year by a fellow secessionist, was taken out by powerful forces in the U.S. before he could reach his U.N. platform. “The United States government would have been deeply embarrassed,” by Vogler’s U.N. speech, darkly suggests Clark. “And we can’t have that, can we?”

The Republican ticket is working hard this week to make Barack Obama’s tenuous connection to graying, ’60s revolutionary Bill Ayers a major campaign issue. But the Palins’ connection to anti-American extremism is much more central to their political biographies.

Imagine the uproar if Michelle Obama was revealed to have joined a black nationalist party whose founder preached armed secession from the United States and who enlisted the government of Iran in his cause? The Obama campaign would probably not have survived such an explosive revelation. Particularly if Barack Obama himself was videotaped giving the anti-American secessionists his wholehearted support just months ago.

Where’s the outrage, Sarah Palin has been asking this week, in her attacks on Obama’s fuzzy ties to Ayers? The question is more appropriate when applied to her own disturbing associations.

Next thread you read, wait for a few more posts before you comment. That way you won’t emabarrass yourself as others will clue you, if you read carefully, that it is an article for discussion, not a troll post.

So I missed one f. You got the idea. The idea you did not get is that it is time to grow up. I know your type. Too much time on your hands and not a clear idea of what to do with it.

Does mommy know you are up this late? Or maybe she doesn't care.

“My government is my worst enemy. I’m going to fight them with any means at hand.”

There was another quote from some freeper that said “The people should not fear the Government. The Government should fear the people.”

Seems to me that is the proper attitude to have. However, I sincerely pray that the government will not be my worst enemy. I’m praying harder and harder every day too. I hope it works.

This election illustrates the negative stereotypes that most Alaskans have of the US.

The government stopped being our "friends" the day after the statehood contract was signed.

The kept control over 98% of our land

They continue to siphon off the majority of the rents royalties, taxes and lease fees from our industries.

They actively fight resource extraction from lands that were promised to development at statehood (ANWR etc.)

Attempts to develop our land and build infrastructure are ridiculed as expensive, unnecessary, wasteful and environmentally unsound. (Ketchikan bridge to Gravinia Island).

They have taken over our wildlife management in the name of protecting subsistance "rights" for native Alaskans and in the process decimated the resource.

This election has illustrated that most Americans view us as a bunch of uneducated hicks and drunked eskimoes that need control from the experts (elite) 3000 miles away in Washington.

It's no wonder that Walley Hickel was the most popular Governor in Alaska history.

I pegged it right the first time. And if you don’t like it, your admonition regarding discussion must have taken a u-turn at your hip pocket.

This is Salon trash. It should be out on the curb by now.

People exploding bombs, mutilated bodies and deaths...

People shooting off their mouth, no injuries, no deaths...

Salon thinks they’ve got a gotcha moment here. Evidently you do too.

There, we discussed it.

I can only speak for myself as a Michigan native transplanted in California. And as for myself, everything I have learned about Alaska in the past month has made me admire it and feel nothing but the most profound gratitude to the people of Alaska for raising up such a wonderful leader among them. No other state in the union could have produced a Sarah Palin.

As I've tried to educate myself (Lord knows if I left it to the MSM I'd still be in the dark) about Alaska, I've come to understand exactly what you mean about infrastructure funding and federal bans on your resource development. It only makes sense that Alaska would get more money for infrastructure than the rest of the "lower 48" considering how new and how huge Alaska is. It wasn't a "bridge to nowhere". I can perfectly understand why Governor Palin wore that t-shirt "Nowhere USA" and what the sentiment was behind that action. It was the defiant need to say, "we are somebody and we won't be disregarded". I also understand and admire her decision to kill the bridge. The rest of the country is not willing to fund anymore "Big Dig" type infrastructure projects.

I've never been to Alaska, but would love to visit someday. My brother traveled all over your great state during a business trip some years ago and has been in love with it ever since. I've got to get up there myself one of these days.

Cheers!
GG

I’m going to appologize for giving you a hard time.

You were being sarcastic and I didn’t give you credit for it.

This is trash. You didn’t write it. I don’t think you agree with it.

So I appologize for not being fair to you.

I’m sorry.

I accept your apology. Of course I don’t agree with it. Maybe I should have put a flag on it. But I thought such balatant trash and sarcasm did not need one.. That said, there are some Freepers who relish shooting from the hip and letting the vitriole fly before engaging in some thought processes.
They will be even more embarrassed if this hits the news cycle.

LOL! Everyone who disagrees with the compost mentalist haunting this thread is apparently a "zit popping teenager".

Sounds like the Democrats are getting to him. Even though you joined well after him, you've shown greater coolness under fire than the class of 2000 n00b that he is. Of course, you always have. ;-)

I appreciate your acceptance of my apology. I try not to shoot from the hip all that often, but it does happen. When I see that I've been wrong, I try to own up to it. Take care. I did not mean to reply to your comments this much after the fact. So... P.S. I had a large number of responses go unresponded to, so it wasn't the nature of your post that affected the timing here.

Thanks for the comments. Sorry to be responding so much later.
