I am not so sure about the rumors on Cdl. Bernadin being in satanic "masses", and I have severe doubt about them, leave that to the Area 51 crew, but the rumors aside, Cdl. Bernadin, who was orginally the Abp. of Cincinati, was the leader and power base of the progressive wing of the Catholic church in the US. He headed up the Chicago Archdiocese for 14 years, and moved the overall church in the US because of his influence, and the fact he influenced who was picked Bishop and his influences on the liturgy quite a bit to the left during the peak of his power in the 80s.

bernadin was mr. milquetoast.

He was mild and charitable to all.

Including homosexuals working in his offices, pedophiles, "womenchurch" feminists, and pseudo "psychologists" like Eugene Kennedy.

He even proposed a "reconcilliation" between the various parts of the church which essentially meant that catholics who followed church rules could not criticize the aggressive liberals who wanted to reform the church into accepting abortion, euthanasia, women priests, and homosexuality...and these liberals were allowed to infiltrate the beaurocracy of the church...

The only one who got in trouble with Bernadine was (ironically) Andrew Greeley, who is a liberal in some ways, but who satirized Eugene Kennedy and Bernadine and the other absurdities in his X rated novels, and blasted them in his biography in the early 1990's...

Okay can you give us non-Catholics the 30 second idiot lesson on what happened, or what Cardinal B. attempted to do, or whatever..?

QUICKLY: Cardinal Bernadin gave lip service to what the Catholic Church holds to be infallible truths when he had to (or else he would have been considered a heretic), but he encouraged and even financed groups which were heretical. (By heretical, I mean in the eyes of the Church to which he belonged.) Such as, supporters of abortion rights, homosexuality, women priests, the pill, extramarital sex, etc., By allowing these people to be a part of the Chruch, he, in essence, offered invalid absolution to their sins.

MORE ON SEX ABUSE: Bernadin spread symapthizers to all major posts throughout the Chicago archdiocese. In the early '90's, he was accused of molesting a man, who later recanted, but his best friend, neighboring archbishop Weakland, was brought down on sex-abuse charges. And he was just as bad, if not worse, at shuffling pederasts as Cardinal Law was. Many people on this web site have passed along stories of ritualized (hence, Satanic) sex abuse from his archdiocese, and speculating that he led some sort of nefarious ring.

I would refrain from attacking the sources, but I am unconvinced about some of the ritual abuse stories. It does seem clear, however, that he helped form a ring of heretics, having great power, within the American Church. He was HEAD of the U.S. Council of Catholic Bishops, (USCCB) which, during his time, was blatantly unorthodox, even, in my opinion, to apostasy. People spoke regularly of the AMERICAN SCHISM.

Further, his management of sexual-abuse cases was so shockingly bad, that I can't help but to speculate he was at best immorally protecting abusers, at worst, one of them.

ON ABSOLUTION: Why do I think of the Soul-Eater (if you haven't caught on)? Because the Soul-Eater offered absolution to horrific sins of unrepentant people. Absolution is intended to be given to sinners who are repentent for their actions. Those who have committed mortal sins, and thus rejected Christ's commandments, are required to receive absolution to signify that they accept Christ and the teachings of his church. If they have not, they are not permitted to receive communion, which is the outward sign of receiving Christ into our hearts. The combination of absolution and communion should ensure that only repentent sinners who have given themselves over to Christ remain in the church. Sadly, the American Church, under Cardinal Bernadin, quit de-emphasized confession. Further, Cardinal Bernadin welcomed people who were committing fornication, homosexuality, and quite possibly pedophilia.
