New rules for taking communion issued
Chicago Sun-Times ^ | July 17, 2003 | CATHLEEN FALSANI

While the changes might seem minor, the first revisions the Vatican has made to the mass since 1975 will affect every Roman Catholic who walks forward for communion.

Before they take the bread and wine, they'll have to bow, as a sign of reverence for the Eucharist, the bread and wine Roman Catholics believe becomes the actual body and blood of Christ during the mass.

Catholics also must be quieter during the mass, sitting meditatively in silence before it begins, after the homily, and after they receive communion instead of chatting with neighbors, or whispering to the kids.

OCP = Oregon Catholic Press

They publish missalettes and have a package deal with music issues. It's invaded all parts of the country.

In the District in which we live, the public school teachers and staff are quite careful about how they present sensitive topics--it's a generally conservative area.

Thus, rather than pay $5K/child to have Father make them into Methodists, we chose to "go public," and work with the darlings on the Catholic Catechism at home.

I was taught to kneel after Holy Communion and then to sit once the Tabernacle door was closed by the priest (now the EEMs).

Same here. Those are the norms established by the GIRM.

"At least we still have valid communion; no corn tortilla or honey flavored stuff as I have seen elsewhere."

Does it matter what the flavor is, as long as it undergoes the change into the Body and Blood?

I don't know - am just asking.

Be sure to scroll down the left side and click on Featured Music. One of their latest diddies is entitled "Keep a-Inchin' Along". Now doesn't that sound inspirational?!

More than likely, yes. In our parish we use a different missalette publisher, but we do use the OCP music issue. :-|

Church law states that the bread that is to be consecrated should be made only of wheat. In the Latin Rite of the Church, this bread is unleavened, while in most of the Eastern Rites, it is leavened.

I'll be good :-)

Seriously, if they want more reverence there is a perfectly simple answer. Return to the past. We had plenty of reverence then, but no, everything has to keep constantly changing. The answer is clear and the bishops are going in completely the opposite direction.

Where it mentions altar cloths "may be of other colors possessing Catholic honorific or festive significance according to longstanding local usage" - - How much do you want to bet that leaves the door open for rainbow colored altar cloths?

In most (but not all) of the Nervous Disorder Masses that I have seen, the extended throng of EMs is like a club of very special people of the extremely liberal and self-important type who like to be seen up in the sanctuary by those little people out there. They are the same people who populate the all-important lay committees, and that insignificant priest had better not prevent them from coming up after consecration to flaunt their honors before the crowd.

They're volunteers, who want to do something for the Church.

Your juvenile and flippant condemnation of dedicated lay people says more about your surly self than it does about these good people.

You simply don't know what you're talking about, so you tear down other people.

It's what you do best.

You seem to have an obsession with homosexuality.

I wonder why.

It's always struck me as strange that the Church can have different matter, and that the matter in one Rite makes the Eucharist invalid in the other.

***Protestants bow.***

Some, certainly not all.

The Protestant churches I have attended for the most part pass the elements to a seated audience. There is a time of prayer (with bowed heads) before partaking.

Catholics bow too. You're slipping into ultra-trad mode Deb.

You think a gesture equates with heresy.
