They keep a tight grasp on their people, and as is typical of many cults, attempt to control almost every aspect of their lives. So many people suffer from scruples due to the over-pious fanaticism taught.

The same has been said about Opus Dei.

Someone with an agenda could call almost any religious organization a "cult".

And...Regnum Christi and the LCs, the charismatic movement, and various Marian groups. Some Protestants think this is common throughout the Church. Wherever you have small numbers in an organization and overly zealous or unbalanced minds, people can start obsessing on mortal sin, Hell, sex, and various other matters in deranged ways. It's best to avoid those who manifest the cultish symptoms.

Attempts to set up ridiculous authoritarian control systems with scrupulosity and exaggerated notions of sin and damnation can be found in various denominations. The fake versions of super-orthodoxy erode people's faith and eventually can lead to serious problems. If encountered, contact with the offending parties should be avoided.
