Good grief!! I'm gonna have to bring a whole box of Kleenex with me to the theater for this one! I was crying just watching the trailer!!

You know, I'm sure that one of the problems the ADL will have with this is the cheering of the crowd during Jesus's humiliation and death. I don't see it as complicity of the Jews, but as just the way crowds can be manipulated to act in such a way that individual humans would not normally consider civilized behavior.

I'll admit that I have on rare occasions shed a tear at a movie, but I don't think a trailer ever jerked a tear out of me before.

What a movie this is going to be.

I am a bit surprised that Gibson chose to show the nails being driven into the palm of Christ's hand. It was my understanding that the medical community has proved that the nails were actually placed in His wrists.

In reality, it was the chief priests that whipped up (manipulated) the crowd.

I saw a documentary on the Discovery Channel that demonstrated that it didn't matter where the nails were positioned on the hands/forearms, since the feet were usually supported by the nail in the feet, and the body's weight rested on the feet.

I thought about that, too. They say the hand can't support the weight. In the trailer, though, there were ropes around the arms, which would have compensated for that.

The Shroud of Turin shows wounds in the wrists, though, so I just don't know.

I viewed this last Friday. It took forever to download on my dial-up connection, and then I had to update my QuickTime viewer before I could see it, so it took several hours of slow download time just to see this short trailer.

I saw this trailer Saturday morning from the Spiritdaily site before I went to work. I went into work and we were talking about movies and I mentioned had anyone heard of Mel Gibson's new movie due out next year? No one had. So I showed them the clip... all of them were silent and very moved after they saw it. None are churchgoers and in fact, none are Catholic. Great way to get the word out and in turn, give them something (some One) to think about (and hopefully, they will pass on the clip themselves).

That would be news to the Church.

"And when he had said this, he shewed them his hands and his side. The disciples therefore were glad, when they saw the Lord." (John 20.20)

"The other disciples therefore said to him: We have seen the Lord. But he said to them: Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails and put my finger into the place of the nails and put my hand into his side, I will not believe. And after eight days, again his disciples were within, and Thomas with them. Jesus cometh, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst and said: Peace be to you. Then he said to Thomas: Put in thy finger hither and see my hands. And bring hither the hand and put it into my side. And be not faithless, but believing." (John 20.25-27)

They were driven into the base of the hands at the wrist proper where there is a gap in several bones for the nail to go through. Cup your fingers together - you will see a crease going towards the middle of the bottom of your hand. Roughly at the end of this crease at the base of the hand is where the nail was driven. This preserved te bones to hold up the body and fulfill scripture. John 19.36 "For these things were done that the scripture might be fulfilled: You shall not break a bone of him."

Where they were NOT driven was through the middle of His Palms or in the fore-arm where you wear a watch or bracelet, which is mistakenly called the wrist. This topic is pretty well covered in "A Doctor at Calvary", which is great Lenten reading.

The wrist proper is part of the hand. St. Thomas touched Our Lord's nail wounds in His hand.
