Bishop Ware is wonderful. I ran into my copy of his book while cleaning/consolidating a basement storage room yesterday, and took it out to read again.

Relations between eastern and western Christendom were also made more difficult by the lack of a common language.

Latin is the common language of Christendom. This text demonstrates why it is important for that commonality of language.

"For many years [he does not say how many] the western Church has been divided in spiritual communion from the other four Patriarchates and has become alien to the Orthodox . . . So no Latin should be given communion unless he first declares that he will abstain from the doctrines and customs that separate him from us, and that he will be subject to the Canons of the Church, in union with the Orthodox."

So there appears to have been significant growth early on in separate directions, and this trend continues to this day. Western isolation bred pride and innovation. Khomiakov was right to stress fellowship as critical for unity.

Thank you for this Historical insite on these events.

I love histroy and timelines. It helps to understand and to put things into prospective.

I just read an article on the Drudge Report that I wish I knew more about maybe some one else saw it.

It had to do with a Mosque being build so close near the ground that Jesus walked.

What the news said was Israel had removed the Mosque and the Christian clergy there were in disagreement with western clergy and disagreed that the Mosque should be removed. They said that western religion was another Christian religion. In other words they don't recognized western Chrsitains!

To me this sounds so strange after all the trouble the mideast Christian had with Islam building over other religious sites

Good post... I am a fan of Bishop KALLISTOS, as his book helped to introduce me to Orthodoxy.

It's too bad that I fear this will turn into just another Catholic-Orthodox flame war...
