But let not your fasts be with the hypocrites, for they fast on the second and fifth day of the week. Rather, fast on the fourth day and the Preparation (Friday).

If you have ever wondered, this is the first century reference for meatless Fridays! Saturday replaced Wednesday as a day of fast in the Western Church around AD 00, and abstinence without fast was generally observed on all Fridays and Saturdays throughout the year until the 19th century when the bishops of the US obtained from Rome a dispensation from the Saturday abstinence.

A shame that something instituted by the Apostles was cast off so cavilerly. As usual, it is the Bishops, and not the laity, clamoring to do away with Holy Tradition.
