With regard instrumentation: it is my considered opinion that few improvements in the technology have been made over the past 400 years (and I watched the History Channel special on torture only last week...) With the possible exception of electrical cords applied to, ummm, various sensitive areas, I can't think of another REAL improvement in devices/apparatus.
